Came across something interesting today. The Hanes manual says to rotate the engine until the lobes are pointing at each other but at their highest level before rolling over, this way you can do both the intake and the exhaust on one side at a time. The Triumph manual though says to do the intake and or the exhaust one at a time and have the tip of the lobe 180 deg away from the bucket. So this way you can only do the intakes on one side, then rotate again to do the exhaust etc.
My question is, has anyone tried this the different ways and if so, did you notice much of a difference if any in your measurment. It just seems (right or wrong) that you might get extra clearance if the lobes are pointing straight up? Or are the lobes already past any shape difference by the time they are rotated to the haynes method?

In the middle of mine and I did mine pretty close to straight up. We stopped right before the piston goes down

I normally measure them with the lobe pointing away from the valve to assure lowest point on the cam.

Ok but has anyone done them both ways to see if the reading was different?

I've only done it with the lobe pointing away from the shim bucket but I'll take one measurements when I'm in there (soon) and see about the difference.

thanks Ed, would be good to know, did not plan on going back in, i took my readings but i did them the way haynes manual said, had a couple intakes a little tight gonna wait till after my trip but i wonder if they would be less "tight" if lobe was 180 deg upwards. Just a thought. I don't need much LOL
