Did a search could not find anything so figured maybe someone would have been through this before, searched the net and came up with several things but might be good for in here for future searches. Anyways like the header says, i rev the engine and the headlight dims, at idle its very bright again. Bike has never died on me, nor has it failed to start, only thing i have done lately is add some LED signal mirrors wich i tapped straight into the existing lines on the bike (with appropriate relay)and also additional front driving lights which i tapped into the existing plug (i did however have to cut the plug off and put different connectors on the wires (original harness did not have the OEM plug attached) but i used the plans from Z on those and i am pretty darn sure its correct, they work fine. I have never noticed it before and i am not sure i have ever paid attention to be honest so not sure how long this may have been going on for. Battery is going on 8 years old now, so likley due anyways, i will pick one up, but other idea's to check?

They all do that, put out a tad mo' volts at idle than higher RPM. Strange.

No. Could be a bad R/R.
What is the voltage output across the battery at idle & at 3k RPM?

IMO, the OEM R/R's are junk.

That is low, but not the worst I've seen.
I'm not impressed with a "bypass" mod on the OEM R/R to achieve mediocre results.

I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Replace the battery.
How does that solve his charging issue?

I'm beginning to think that this charging issue is nothing standard, seems like every Triumph has a slightly different voltage/RPM value. Mine charges slightly more at idle than off throttle a bit. Really crazy, but they go down the road OK.

i am thinking the RR is on the way out, at 5k rpm i should be just over 14. i am thinking, i also notice that it will give me higher results (not recorded but noticed) at 2k repm versus the 2500 which i thought a bit odd, Went through all the connections cleaned her up, new battery and will check results tomorrow, could be looking into a new RR is good idea, OEM one 300.00 here! nuts man.

I wouldn't spend a dime on an OEM R/R...I can recommend Rick's...there is at least one thread about it here: Rick's R/R

Here's the info for the aftermarket regulator. Sounds like this fellow is the one to talk to. Copied and pasted from the " regulator mod done" thread. http://roadstercycle.com/Shindengen%20Mosfet%20Regulator%20about.htmthese mosfet regulators are great if your looking to upgrade from the stock. i have one for my bike. and the owner jack is awesome. Ken is the wire the same length? mine is pretty easy to get to with the freak kit just goes straight up under the seat, really easy to unplug and change if i have too? looks like a decent price too, just same plug and play or?

The Ricks is plug and play, however unless you want to drop the engine, plan on cutting off the old connector (regulator side, of course) in order to remove the old R/R from the bike.
The new cable was long enough to route to the starboard side. Since the pic was taken of my install, I also included a black zip-tie on the bottom of the starboard side cover bracket to keep the cable off of the engine.
It is as easy as separate the connector, unbolt the old one, clip the old cable, bolt on the new unit, route the cable, pack the connector with dieletric grease, get out your multi-meter, fire it up, and marvel at the improvement...

I was getting 13.8 v at idle and 12.04 at 3000 rpms lights dim out. Well I almost bought a new one and decided to hookup another battery. Guess what; the positive wire was loose tighten it (and the negative just in case) walla!!!!! 13.5 at idle 14.6 at 3000 rpms. Kis.

Ed, one thing to check is the condition of the regulator connector. If can get hot and often melt giving all kinds of messed up voltage readings.
