I rolled over 103K miles Friday, and my bike had never run better. Over Thursday and Friday, I rode over 500 miles, spent both nights at home, and figured I would duplicate that again on Saturday and Sunday. Then it happened. I ran over something big, and I never saw it. Straight, two lane road, in traffic, maybe moving 40 mph....I was glad it didn't upset the bike, and worried I might have cut a tire....and about a mile later, lost power, saw oil pressure light on, and immediately had a parking lot to turn into. She died as I pulled in the clutch, and when I dismounted I saw I was trailing oil. 30 miles from home, but still "in town", I called the tow service we use at the dealership, and they brought me home. I bought a new filter and oil, but only got a couple of ounces out of the sump when I dropped the plug. Filled her up, and she won't crank over. I'm still carrying insurance, but I'm not expecting much....played phone tag with the adjuster today, but we never spoke. So I've got some decision(s) to make. Trying to be optimistic and look at the bright side....new bike? What would I get? Maybe a newer Speedmaster? What year did they bring FI to it here in the states? Seems to me that 2010 might be the only year with the old frame and Fuel Injection? Didn't the 2009 get the new tank, but still had the carbs? I'm really bummed about it, and have no idea what I'm going to do. I'm certain they will total it with over 100K, right? Seriously, that very morning I was thinking of how cool it would be to put 200K miles on it.... Whatever I do, though, it will be a Triumph. If they sold the Tiger Sport here in the states, I think my mind would already be made up....

What a total bummer!!! 100 k with plenty of life left in her... it's just beyond words. Maybe pick up a used engine? You'd have some great parts from your old motor to keep 'er going for years to come.

I was thinking new/wrecked low miles engine too. The insurance co probably won't give you much for a bike with 100k so might be the best option.
Regarding EFI the new tank & frame came in 07 or early 08 I think (but still with carbs) and the first real EFI came in late 08 here in Aus. Probably the same in the USA.

Assuming the damage is limited to the cylinder, I think I'd bore it and go oversize. Or maybe just get a salvage engine. You need to keep the bike, it has a soul.

Definitely sounds like time for a big bore. I wouldn't mention the mileage to insurance, just see if they'll even give you anything for the damage. Sucks man, sorry to hear it

Yup, make it a big boar.
With those miles, I'm betting all the rotating stuff is well "slopped" and probably had enough oil to survive, and the damage is just on the cylinder walls and rings/piston.

Wow Keith that is a bummer for sure. I Know how much you like that bike. Gotta be a tuff pill to swallow after all those miles a piece of crap does in the oil filter. I've read a few good suggestions here, one thing I wouldn't do is get rid of her. Even if it meant just parking her in the corner. There a lot of miles and a lot of smiles on the ole girl.

Ouch. I think I'd pull the heads and have a look-see; it might just be the top end and you could have some easy options if the walls aren't scored too deeply. Or, Pinwall has a complete 07 engine up right now ( Motor ) and you could do a swap. I'm thinking big bore, either from Carlos or Bill Gately.

I'm sorry Keith. You've had some good times on that bike. The Bigbore kit sounds like a good idea. Or your could always get a new Thunderbird.

With 100k on it rebuild or big-bore would not take into consideration any transmission issues on the horizon with the age and use of the bike. If you are really attached to the bike, Dog said it right. Pull the whole unit and do a swap for another one. I think 08 and under is what you are looking for.

OMG! What a bloody thing to happen. I offer you my sympathy. and I hope you get fixed one way or another satisfactorily.
When I first saw where Triumph had put the oil filter on our bikes I remember thinking it was an Achilles heel and a weak point.

On a positive note its good the oil didn't get on the rear tire and cause a crash. They're building new bikes every day but the rider is not replaceable.

The Rocket uses a chrome steel cover that slips tightly over the oil filter. Friction fit. Should stay in place when forced on.
If you lost oil pressure, I'm pretty sure your main and probably rod bearings are seized on the crank. If they spun in the main bore, the crankcase will be toasted. We had someone a year ago or so seize an engine when he lost an oil pump. Went with a Pinwall engine if I remember correctly and it worked well for him.

Kieth, that really is a terrible turn...but @ 100K you got yer $$$ outta that mill for sure! I'm thinking Pinwall would have a replacement mill....but like the idea of going to a big bore kit too.... Sure hope it doesn't cost you a pile o' $$$ to get her back on the road my friend....best of luck Hmmmmm.......I'm thinkin a frame mounted skid plate mod may be in order on my BA....

Crummy bummer, for sure. I sure hope I get to 100 K cause that would be some braggin rights around here. And a crappy thing like that is why I built a steel shield plate to go under my filter! I just felt uncomfortable with that filter hangin that low in the breeze...

If you go Pinwall pay close attention to the front motor mount especially, they seem to get damaged in wrecks.

I'm lovin'in all the love. Lot's of good advise. If it wasn't for this forum I probably wouldn't be riding a Triumph to begin with.
Definitely going to keep her. Regardless. It will be mid to late June before I really know anything about how serious the damage is. That's okay. It's getting hot here, and I have no big plans again until football season starts again.
I've got two boys, 26, and 24, non-riders. I've thought all along if one of them would ever go take the class.....
That little 790 with the hotter cams sure did love to run, though. 5K RPM all day long, 8-10 hours a day or more, and for days on end. Never a whimper. Twist and go.

I'm so happy! I found a 2009 Speedmaster on Cycle Trader at the Honda dealer in Beamont, Tx. Made an inquiry, and made a deal. Rode it home today and it still has less than 7K miles on it. Lots of add-ons, too, without modding anything too much to ruin it. Sta-in-Tunes, Low Sissy Bar & Rack, Triumph Large Leather Bags,Tank Bra, and Light Bar, IsoGrips, Clearview Summer Screen, ThrottleLock Cruise Control. Still has the Gunfighter, though. I got home with it at 2:00, with time still to get my 2004 up to the shop so Progressives' boy insurance adjusters can take a look this week. I rolled her out of the garage, said "what the heck", and hit the start button. First two cranks were pretty stiff, but it turned, then suddenly fired right up as if she'd simply been in a deep sleep the last two weeks! I rode her up onto the trailer and hauled her to the shop anyway, but real undecided as to what to do, now. I think the best thing would be to leave her alone, ride as much as I can, then change the oil again in 500 miles. I always send an oil sample in to Blackstone Labs at every change, anyway, and I will send in the two ounces or so I drained out of her two weeks ago, and let's see what happens. The Oil Reports will tell me at least as much as any tear-down would, maybe more. I had two goals today. Get the new bike home, despite the weather, and get the old bike to the shop for the insurance inspection. But to have the old bike fire up like that, I'm real stoked. Very, very happy tonight!

Hope it works out that the old bike is just fine, and was just angry with you. I had a donkey like that once, she would do just fine until she had enough then she would just stop and no amount of anything could budge her. After a couple of days she would be just fine like nothing ever happened.

Yea I got rid of that donkey too. I got rid of my first wife. Can't remember why I was ever even with her. She never was worth a damn at anything. Hell the dude she got with after a got rid of her committed suicide.

Way to go finding a new bike Keith. Maybe you can break it in proper by coming to the AR rally later this year. Hopefully the old bike is fine with some new oil and you can pass it on to one of your boys.

I've not seen an owner's manual, but assume no changes from Triumph as far as oil recommendation. Unless someone pipes up here, I plan on using the Shell Rotela T6 5W-40 Synthetic. Extreme temperature protection. Is there anything we need more than that?

And, for the oil report.
Turning radius? I'm not quite sure what you mean, Jim.
This is the same bike/frame as the '04, not the "new" frame withe the 21" front wheel.
I've only ridden it from Beaumont home - pretty much a straight line, until Thursday, night when I made my weekly run across Houston to Deer Park. Freeway interchanges.
First of all, this windscreen is bigger than I thought. Bigger than a Summer Screen, anyway. I like to ride about 80 (over80), and this screen is a freakin' wall in front of me. I can really feel the resistance at that speed. And the tall chrome risers? It's a good match, allowing a much more relaxed riding position than the stock Speedmaster risers do, and I'm looking right over the top of the screen. Great cruising, I'm sure, maybe at a slower pace.
I'm going to have to re-learn how to ride these oh-so-familiar roads and curves, though, as the handling is different. Err,not the same. Change in turning radius? Due to the risers. It does u-turn in the street fairly easily, though, and feels light, despite the screen.
I won't throw a lot of money at this one, though, at least not for a while. I miss my heal-toe shifter (a lot), but I'm going to force myself to learn to ride without it. (The '04 was my first and only until now, and I had the heal-toe put on before they brought her to me.) I need an EZTag around here, and then a thumb screw for the back of the seat. Then a plate for the inspection sticker to move it to the chain guard.
Priorities!!!

Insurance update:
They came and looked twice this week. Nothing to see the first look, except for the damaged filter.
I agreed to have the oil pan removed for inspection. Nothing in there but new oil.
So he tells me they are going to pay for all that, and my $200 tow bill, and the oil and filter I bought the day it happened.
And we're going to put the pan back on, and I'm going to ride her and see what happens.
I sent in the two ounces of oil that came from the sump after towing her home that day, so we'll see how that oil report compares to those prior. And if she holds up, I'll have to decide when to sample again - 500 miles? 1K miles? They will keep the claim open and see what happens.
Time will tell. Getting her good and hot again will tell.

"Turning radius is narrower" translates to the steering stops on the lower triple tree are closer together. Shallower? meaning you can't steer the bike as deep into a direction.

When were the steering stops changed? What year?

Prudence is the only non pre-fire I've ridden. Sort-of. Maneuvering the bikes in the garage was the tell tale. wth won't Prudence cut a tight circle. Ohhhhh. The FI prep had started, for me, with the 2007 model year. However, much like the phase out of the Bonneville America side cover, it is possible that the lower TT was phased out/in in much the same manner. You'll get used to it, until you throw a leg over an earlier model...You can still cut tight circles, your gonads have to be a bit larger as you have to lean the bike in a manner similar to the way bigjack would load/unload his bike from a trailer. Aggressively!

You'll get used to it, until you throw a leg over an earlier model...You can still cut tight circles, your gonads have to be a bit larger as you have to lean the bike in a manner similar to the way bigjack would load/unload his bike from a trailer. Aggressively!

This thing feels lighter, for some reason, and I can't figure out why. I put over 250 miles on it this weekend, and remember now why I put in the Progressive fork springs years ago. That will be a necessity.
This windshield is kicking my *ss, though. No buffeting, and just the right height, but I can NOT get any air! I feel air on my chest and arms through my mesh Raptor, but inside the full face, it's quite stifling, unless I crack the visor, and then it's noisy. I may appreciate it come cooler weather, but for this heat, I WANT MY FLYSCREEN BACK!
When I got home, doing the big u-turn at the top of my driveway, in front of my truck, (so I could back it into the garage) - that's when I noticed the shallower steering! It just wouldn't go where the '04 always would! I'll get used to it.
All of this low-end grunt and power is amazing! I'm doing things at 2K RPM that would have never felt right on the 790....

Leaving College Station back in 2007 I came close to turning Cinnamon Girl's summer screen into a Frisbee just about the time I rolled into Oklahoma City. Hot as Hades and no wind on me. Unlike you though, I had no longing for any screen!
