My 07 SM was having battery charging woes, traced to the OEM R/R as the likely cause. This was probably going on for some time.

The OEM Yuasa battery that I replaced is doing fine holding resting voltage. I'll reuse it in my riding mower.

IMO, the OEM R/R is junk. Plain & simple.

I don't know what idiot routed the OEM wiring from the R/R to the main wiring harness, but it looks like one literally has to drop the engine from the frame in order to remove the OEM R/R and keep the connector intact. Piss on that. I cut the connector off instead.

Here's the Rick's replacement & the OEM R/R side by side: hint - the OEM has the connector cut off

Rick's unit mounted on the bike:

New wire routing:

New wire bundle is zip-tied to other wiring bundle to keep it in place.

Bonus tip: pack the new connector with dielectric grease. "Spark plug boot grease" works also.

Voltage is now stable & where it should be.

I bought a replacement a couple years back. Still sitting on my bench. I put the connectors on it a few weeks ago. At this rate it might be installed in a couple more years

I agree, that OEM wire routing is garbage!

I've had issues with my 07 speedy as well seeming like the battery always has a slow drain. I wonder if this is my issue, too.

Where can one of these replacement R/Rs be purchased? Sounds like a good add for my speedy love project.

I posted this in another thread, too, but I replace my R/R with Rick's today. Here are my results so far:

RPM ------ Stock R/R -- Rick's R/R

1,050 ------ 12.4 ------ 13.9-14.6
1,500 ------ 14.4 ------ 14.6
2,000 ------ 14.1 ------ 14.8
3,000 ------ 13.8 ------ 14.8
3,500 ------ 13.8 ------ 14.8
4,000 ------ 14.0 ------ 14.8

The swing at idle is a little odd but I'm not worried about it. It was an easy upgrade, but sucked having to cut the cable for the factory R/R.
