Just learnt new stuff. The pressure relief valve in my Pure One PL14612 filter, which has a rating of 12-18psi, has nothing to do with the oil pressure in the bike or the bike's relief valve which has a rating of 80psi. I thought it was a fail safe.

The bypass valve in the filter senses the PRESSURE DROP from the inlet of the filter to the outlet of the filter. It has NOTHING to do with the oil pressure delivered by the oil pump.
If the inlet of the filter has 12 pounds MORE oil pressure than the outlet--indicating that the filter has plugged and is now restricting oil flow--the bypass valve opens.
