So I finally found out what is causing the starter to spin but not turn the engine.... it wasn't even touching the reduction gearing. Not sure how it happened but the gear has bust the housing on the engine and the outer casing. Luckily I have a really handy mate who says he can fix it

If you have the broken parts that Safe Start might be a fix.

I think my mate is going to do a similar thing to what Dogg33 posted. Just picking up a new Engine case.

You would need both cases since they are a matched set line bored.

Watch you tawkin bout Willis? Ian means that that the outer and inboard case are married together and then machined as one, resulting in a perfect match up. A replacement will hopefully be in close enough tolerance, and you will be good to go. The answer will be down the road if it's good, and sooner if not. With modern machining tech, you have a lot better chance of a good match than 25 years ago. Use a good assembly grease, like the stuff that comes with a new cam. oil breaks it down after run in and it will lube normally then. And good luck.

Arrrh I see... I assumed the engine cases were consumer replaceable as just the one item and regularly done by people who want the black covers or vice versa. I shall inspect on arrival

Hey Pete, buy 5 or 6 cheap steel, 2-1/2" long, 6 mm bolts and hacksaw the heads off and wind them into your inner case a few turns, evenly spaced apart. Now you can hang your gasket on the pins with no assist, and then slide your casing on, straight and true. Start all the other bolts, wind out the locators, and finish the bolt up.

Arr cool... I thought the engine part of the case had pins in it when I took the outer off so it would have to line up.. is that not right?

Yes, it has 2, IIRC, short locating dowels, they do the alignment once you get it close.

Actually I thought he meant he was going to replace the case that the inner part rides in and those are a set. The Primary cover wouldn't be a problem. To me the cover are covers and the cases are where the mains ride.

Dog33 is correct, the Safe-Start can be used to repair an engine casing if you have all the broken parts. But ideally it's best to protect your engine from the outset, as when this happens the idler gear tends to grind the front of the engine case away which creates fine particles of aluminium circulating in your engine oil.

Since I have not had one of these new bikes apart, is there a sludge trap in the crank like the old engines had or do they depend solely on the filter?

No sludge trap, just the filter.

Mine was cracked, about 1/8th of an inch across the top of the boss....took it to a friend who fabricated a "collar" to fit around the boss at close tolerance, then JB Welded the area. Started fine a few times, then had to take the cover off again to replace the gasket, and the pin came off with the side cover (not good), and the JB Weld was cracked circumferencially....Took vice grips, re-inserted pin, and TRIED to get the boss to break, but seems solid at this point...re-assembled and crossed fingers...not sure how many starts I have left....Maybe 1, maybe 1000....

Yeah, there was some tiny particles in the oil tray when all the oil came flooding out lol. My mate seems pretty confident he can fix it without too much hassle (machining a plate and brace or something).
I shall report back when we're go.

As Ian and Pieman stated, get the Safe Start from Triumph twin power. Assemble the broken pieces, then fit the machined collar over it JB welding the whole thing. Maybe tig weld the broken piece before installing the Safe Start.

I think he's removing the rest of the broken mount and doing something... He's a machinist by trade and motorcycle guru... I'll post what we fix!

Yep, had the same thing happen on my 05 Speedy. Welded up the boss, used a bolt for internal support through the shaft and boss drilled into the case. Had to replace the clutch cover but everything else was good. Just to be on the safe side I removed the oil sump, cleaned it out (there was very little there) and did an oil flush with light weight oil. No problems since.
