I priced Amsoil yesterday and it has gotten so expensive I am going back to Mobil 1. I like the Amsoil better but at about $13 a qt compared to about $6 a qt for Mobil 1 I just can't justify that price difference when the quality is almost the same.

$20 bucks a liter at Canadian Tire..... Mobil's $15. I'd gladly pay the US price.
What's it like in Aussi land or over the pond?

Well when I say about $13 it's closer to $14, I will always run full sythetic and the best oil I can get but Mobil is so close to Amsoil I can't justify paying twice the price.

I look at the oil test results and go by that.Wal Mart by me doesn't have the Mobil 1 4T and it's $11 at Auto Zone so I'll go Amsoil.

No doubt about it, olive oil can be used for several different applications

Not true, some oils have more surface tension than other and some stand up to heat better than others, some have contaminants that others don't, some inhibit wear better than others. It is good to do regular oil changes but it definitely does make a difference what oil you use. Some work better in a transmission than others and hold up to that shear better....etc....

You might better take a second look at that $6 Mobil 1 and make sure that it is the 4T version. If not, you are buying the car version that has friction modifiers that will ruin your clutch. The 4T version that is made for motorcycles is normally priced in the $10-12 range.

I am very well aware of the differences in oils, Wal Mart had it last year at about $6 a qt but the Wal Mart by me doesn't carry it. I would have to drive 45 minutes to the one that has it so no real savings once I figure in gas and time. Auto Zone has the 4T for $10.99 a qt but I'll buy the Amsoil for $13 instead for such a small difference in price plus I already have 1 1/2 qts of the Amsoil.

Mobil 1 4T was about US$14 per quart in Aussie a couple of years ago. I got 16 litres (17qts) then and haven't used it up yet. Used to use Amsoil but it got too pricey and Mobil 1 4T is nearly as good and streets ahead of most other oils.

The last 2 changes I used Valvoline synthetic 4t MC oil since it is around $7 at Wal-mart. I didn't think anything of it but the Mobil 1 4T is visibly thicker than the Valvoline. I'm thinking about switching back to Mobil even though it is about $3 more per quart.

Just had a look at the Motul pack and it has - 4L(1.05 US Gallons) printed on it.

Good way to buy it in bulk Richard.I'm using Motoul 10/50.I paid $65 for 4 litres from my local bike shop.Which I thought was expensive, but seeing your post. I think maybe not TOO bad.Of course the Local Bike shop make a couple of dollars but they're pretty good and will negotiate.

I drive 25 miles to the nearest town with an auto parts store (NAPA) and when I ask them for the extra special Mobil 1 racing oil Triumph would have me use, their eyes glaze over... Problem is, it is getting real hard to find Mobil 1 in 10W40 or 20W50... the only synthetic that comes in those weights is the "high mileage" stuff... Not sure I want to use that stuff as they have a lot of additives in that oil. NAPA generally carries 10W40 synthetic in oil that is aimed at V-twins... keep in mind that this stuff is meant for bikes with a separate tranny (and clutch) so I don't feel good about it. If I cared to void the warranty on my 2004 BA (just joking), I would use GTX 10W40. I used to use fleet oil Shell Rotella 15W40 in my vintage Japanese bikes as the oil doesn't break down as quickly as other dino oils but I found too much sludge in my oil pans... that is why I switched to GTX as it doesn't sludge. I change oil in those bikes every 2K miles or so.
