The shim worked thanks for the suggestion and thanks again to Pat for posting the easy to do instuctions on his website.
( this site does not allow for opposing thumb salute.)
As a test I put the snorkel back in to see if I had the same reaction to throttle response and did not so concluded it was not gunge in the carb.
