It looks like Triumph Twin Power has come up with a fix for the dreaded starter idler gear boss failure we have seen on our twins, especially the older ones. It looks like they have machined a piece to go over the existing boss reinforcing it, utilizing JB weld so it shouldn't break. Clik the LINK

Nice one, Greg. This could save the day for some of us with early models.

Don't forget to click the blue "Do I Need A Safe-Start" tab, then click the picture twice to see examples of the old and newer bosses.

Keep in mind this is a fix to prevent not a fix after it happens. Doing this now will prevent the damage, not fix it after it happens. Thats a sexy looking part, too bad it can't be seen

Never heard of this issue until just recently, and now, since I've got an '02, I'm wondering if I should go with this peace o' mind insurance policy.

I have been considering it, bit pricey but cheaper than fixing the broken engine.

If you have an early model bike this should be on the must have list. Heck... I even strongly discourages a friend from buying a sweet early America because of the potential of this issue happening.

I would if it were mine.

So when did we (at the site) start getting dialed in on this? Really, I'd never heard of it until Mark's (b117doc)'05 came up lame.

Well it's done. $162 delivered seems a bit pricey but like Dog said, cheaper than fixing the engine. It'll be #1 on the spring to-do list.

I could swear that this seemed more like an issue with the 04's than any other year...

I read the first report of this happening on here a few years ago. It doesn't happen often but when it does it seems to be on pre 05 models or grey engine cases.

I have never had mine fire back that I can remember but I have it tuned right. Just like the stories of the old Triumphs being hard to start, Mine always started on one kick because I tuned them right. Still thinking about the fix just in case it ever does.

You could probably turn a bushing to fit in that part and have a good welder weld it in place to fix a broken one.
