My 2005 America will turn over maybe 2 revolutions, then just "whine"...New battery, 13.8 vdc at idle, no obvious draining of battery, and only when the engine is cold. She will start eventually, but very frustrating...Once engine is hot, she starts very nicely, like new....Im thinking the starter is the culprit, but not sure...If it was a relay or something, seems it would do it regardless of engine temperature....Anyone got a used starter for sale?

I doubt it is the starter if it is spinning. I'm guessing the sprag clutch is slipping. It is part of the starter gear train. Usually a weak battery will cause this. I think Grzegorz had this problem some time ago and he had to replace it. Usually corrects itself. What type of oil in the bike?

Mobil 1 V-Twin....I've got the sprag clutch out, has a burnt smell to it, but nothing obvious...wish I could "fix" it somehow, as they are $218.44 Will be replaced soon...

I had exactly the same problem ....cold difficult start ,just turning turning and when finally started there were no problems ....till one day did not start at all....no damage to cases but sprag clutch replaced.....that was about 2005 when bike had 13000 miles now still going strong with 82000.....
my theory is that something not catching very well but when engine is hot metal expands everything works ok
