If you had to relocate for whatever reason and had the (reasonable) means to live anywhere you wanted, where would you move.

Rules:

1. It can't be where you now live.
2. It can be anywhere in the USA or any other place on earth.
3. The move would be expenses paid for relocation, but your income level would initially remain equivelant to what you now make - to include cost of living increases to adjust for a higher area in order to establish and maintain your current standard of living.
4. You may choose up to two places.
5. Yes, Chris (Stern12), you may bring your wife.

I've thought about this for many years and for me, three factors are critical:

1. Has to be in the US
2. Has to have mountains
3. Has to have a ocean close by

I found that there is only one place that truly fits the criteria and that is Hawaii. I will never be able to fulfill this dream due to other constraints so I make do with what I have and visit 2 and 3 as often as possible!

I haven't been in nearly enough places to make that call. I'd have to go shopping. But if I had to chose now from the places I have been, I'd pick Nelson, BC. If I had to guess about someplace else, I'd say New Zealand. Still, I'd have to visit first to be sure.

Right where I live now. I am 2hrs for the beach or the mountains. If I want to go to the big city it is 3hrs to Atlanta or Charlotte. We have Polo and Horse racing. If I want southern beauty and history I can be in Charleston or Savanna in less than 3Hrs. The oldest golf clubhouse in the country is in my town and if I am lucky enough to get Masters ticks it takes me about 20min. to drive across the river to Augusta. Unfortunately because of this Aiken has become one of the top 10-retirement communities in the country. But the best thing of all about living here is I can ride year round. And not just in love with where I grew up, I have lived in Chicago, Norfolk, Memphis, Jacksonville, Key West, and Le More Cla.

Take a look at Aiken www.aiken.net

I don't really care as long as,
1. Prices are sane (eliminates where I live now)
2. There is a reasonable motorcycling community.
3. There are some motorcycling events I'd care to attend.
4. Most people speak English to some degree (eliminates where I live now)
5. I can ride comfortably most of the year. (eliminates 2/3 of the world)

I faced this question roughly 4 years ago, and decided to move where we are now for many different reasons. If I had to choose an alternative, it would most likely be Costa Rica someplace in the mountains, like north of San Ramon or maybe closer to Puntarenas.

Cheers,
Brad

More than likely Wyoming. They mostly talk cowboy English not Mexican. Mostly conservative and are not afraid of shooter or two. The economy is kinda boom or bust, but if you have a retirement coming in you could make it. The weather is not the best for riding a good part of the year though.

The ANSWERS you're lookin' for.....

(1)SoCal...in the good ol' U.S. of A.

(2)SoCal...has got PLENTY o' MOUNTAINS.

(3)SoCal...ever heard of the PACIFIC ocean?

Cheers,
Dwight

Perhaps I should have added:

4. Primary language - English
5. Must not be Kalifornia

(and should have read AN ocean... forgot to grammar check it)

Glenwood, New Mexico - About 4,000 ft elevation which means it rarely snows and it's not too hot in the summer. It's about an hour drive to Silver City, NM which has enough services. Great roads to ride in this area...hwy 180 north and then jump over to Arizona, or just keep going north on hwy 32 and 36. Very little traffic, but the elk in the area would mean no night riding. In the winter you could ride south into Arizona.

2nd choice would be tougher, but Northern California has it's appeal. Either Sierra foothills or something up the coast. Around the redwoods would be nice, although I'm not sure I'd like all that rain they get. But access to all those great roads up there is tempting.

Ideally though, it'd be great if I could have 2 residences. One where it's warmer in the winter, and the other that's cooler in the summer. As much as I rail on the snowbirds here in Tucson for clogging up the streets, they do have the right outlook when it comes to living to suit the climate. Hey, maybe that motorhome isn't such a bad idea. Just drive around with a bike and a car trailered behind it, and live anywhere you want for as long as you want.

That's why I hate it here, sigh..... Unfortunately, they pay me lots of money and as I can almost see the end of this road, I will ride it until it dries up Then, at least 100 miles north!!

You and your bikes are fine as are the other good people I've met. The scenery is great, the wines are awesome, and the weather is as good as Florida.

However, I have also met the nastiest, most pretentious, mindless, simpering, braindead, self absorbed, vile humans there.

Did I mention I like the wine?

this should get some sighs of disbelief.

If i had to move away from where i am. Which in itself would be torture because this area of the planet is truly beautiful But if i had to pick another place to live then Paris would probably be high on my list of places to move to. I love that city.

But you didnt here that from me. I wouldnt want to be black balled from Bonnevilleamerica.com

Let's see...
Anywhere it doesn't snow EVER.
Anywhere they don't practice Daylight Savings Time (I hate getting out of work when its dark half the year).
Preferably close to water.

Any suggestions?

The irony of my job is that I need to be in a bigger city, cause I work in an IT data center, and big cities are definitely not on my list of favorite places.

Anywhere? Hmmm....
Taos, New Mexico
Dubois, Wyoming

Or, many college towns, because I like being around the open minded, young people with fresh, new ideas.

Pretty damanding there roundy....
Arizona is one of the few places that doesn't have Daylight Savings time - except on a part of the Hopi Reservation (try being in Tuba City sometime, where the time changes when you cross the street - in the same small town!)
Tucson doesnt' get MUCH snow, Phoenix even less. San Diego is about 6 hours away, Rocky Point in Mexico is even less (its on the Gulf of Calif). There are some local lakes(reservoirs).
B
(oh crap - did I just invite another transplate to Arizona!!! - Derek and those in Phx don't hate me. Course he won't come to Flagstaff as we have lots of snow - sometimes!)

Amen to that. Myrtle is not what it was years ago, and is longer part of SC. Got to go further down the coast to still get to the really good places.

Janet and I spent two weeks travelling that area a few years ago, Becky. Spent two days at Lake Powell/Page and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The loop was Denver, Mesa Verde National Park (NP), Four Corners, Grand Canyon NP, Lake Powell, Zion NP, Bryce NP, Arches NP, Grand Junction, Rocky Mountains NP, & Colorado Springs. Hit every little stop in between (like Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Utah, very cool). Put 5000 miles on the rental SUV!

It was one of the best times of my life. I especially liked Zion. What an outstanding place! I hear some changes have been made there though....

I've often thought of moving to the "Ozarks" of Mo.
Good weather
Great bike riding
Good Fishing & Hunting
Low cost of living
English still spoken there
I'm not sure if you have to marry your sister or not
