Hi all,
Been a while since I've been here. My 05 Speedy's been laid up in the barn for 4 years and getting ready to ride again.
Knowing the carbs are going to be a mess I pulled them and in the process of cleaning them up. I stripped 3 of the float bowl screws but after getting creative I got them out. Got the main jets out OK but I'm concerned about the pilots, sure don't want to strip them as everything seems tight. Question is, do ya'll use a certain type of screwdriver for jets?
Any tips or suggestions concerning cleaning carbs and removing jets would be greatly appreciated.

I use regular good quality screw drivers that fit the slot perfectly. A good twist usually removes them. The carbs should probably be dunked in carb cleaner. You can pick some up at auto repair places but the carbs should be stripped of all plastic and rubber components (o rings and diaphrams) before they are dunked. I hope you have a good assembly diagram of the carbs to track all the components. Pulling the main jets could cause some components to fall out like the nozzles. Pulling the idle mixture screws could damage the o rings. Some compressed air and a fine nozzle will help when blowing out the fuel and air passages.

just make sure the screwdriver you use is a PERFECT fit, if not grind it or do what you have to do to make sure its a solid match, push in on it a bit and turn slowly with pressure, you should be good.

Thanks guys, do you know if the slot is the same size on both the main and pilots? The screwdriver I used on the main is to big to fit in the pilot hole but I have one that will fit the hole but doesn't fit he slot but I can modify it to fit the main slot and use for the pilot if they are the same size. Hope that makes sense.

IMO you'd be better off to buy a new set of pilot jets and match the screwdriver to them before you attempt to remove to old crusty and surely stuck old jets. Not much room for error here. I'd also soak the pilot tube in carb cleaner before I took that first go at them.

jets are relatively cheap. just a molecule of gunk in 'em and they be no good
