Why not have a thread here as well
I was in first grade Oakwood Elementary. We were released early but I did not understand why. As I walked home from the school grounds I recall seeing the flag at half staff, again not truly understanding the moment in time. Arriving home my grandmother, my care giver god rest her soul was riveted to the grainy black and white tv in tears. I grew up faster than I wanted to that day and as the events unfolded in the days ahead, as did the rest of the country.

Two grades ahead of you. Although in Canada, I grew up in Windsor where Detroit was a big influence. Can't remember if we were let out but I do remember it being announced and a apprehensive attitude at home around that week and after.

Eleven years old and in the sixth grade at the time and coincidentally happened to be my elementary school's "flag monitor" at the time.
And thus was old enough to grasp some of the significance of this moment as I lowered Old Glory to half-staff out in front of our school and after my teacher requested me to perform this function after we all heard the news of the President's death over the classroom's old AM radio.

I was probably just potty trained (3 yrs old). My rapid aging occurred when the Beatles announced they were more popular than Jesus. (6.5).

Yeah, John Lennon's comment didn't play very well in the Bible Belt, did it Jim! (...nor within the confines of The Vatican, I'll bet!)

I was in 6th grade attending school on a military base in San Antonio. There was an announcement over the intercom, we were told to go directly home. The only times I ever saw military police lock down a base carrying carbines were that day and during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I never lived on a SAC base.

Yep Paul, "YEEEE-haaaaaw"! That's the one alright! Btw, and in an attempt to get this baby here a little more back on-track after my slight sidetracking, I'm going to add the following info about "Dr. Strangelove" and how JFK's assassination affected this classic film: (per Wikipedia) Quote:
The Kennedy assassination
A first test screening of the film was scheduled for November 22, 1963, the day of the John F. Kennedy assassination. The film was just weeks from its scheduled premiere, but because of the assassination the release was delayed until late January 1964, as it was felt that the public was in no mood for such a film any sooner. One line by Slim Pickens—"a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas with all that stuff"-while going through the inventory checklist of their survival kits with his crew, was dubbed to change "Dallas" to "Vegas", since Dallas was the city where Kennedy was killed.

I was 7 y/o and running through the living room, heading outside. My Dad told me to stop running. Seemed strange at the time to see my Dad watching TV, so I knew something was up, but nothing further was ever said.
My folks were old school. Children weren't exposed to the horrors of society.

I was in 4th grade and remember wondering why everyone was so upset, it's not like we actually knew him. I had been to a few funerals of people we knew and didn't remember nearly such a fuss. My mother was fairly quiet about it but told me it was a big deal.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Well Larry, knowing as we do your now often stated opinions around here, I'm gonna go out on limb and guess you might have acquired those opinions from your parents, and thus I JUST can't resist adding the following to your above quote with:
"Nor anybody I knew VOTING for him EITHER!!!"

I was 19 years old. 2 years in the Navy. Walking down a street in Long Beach, Ca. As I passed a barber shop the TV inside broadcast the president was dead. I stood and listened to the details. All around me stopped to. My 19 year old brain said we are going to war. I took the next buss back to the base. I was as mad and sad at the same time. I think mostly mad. Who could kill our president?

Watching a history channel show on the different theories of the killing and some of them are really out there. Like the limo driver fired the fatal shot, or the guy with the open umbrella was a signal man or he was killed to keep aliens under wraps, etc...
I learned all I need to know about life by killing smart people and eating their brains. Eat right ,Exercise ,Stay fit, Die Anyway!

I was in forth grade coming up on my ninth birthday, Helen M. Knight elementary, Moab Utah. I had just gotten back to school from lunch (I walked home for lunch every day) and Mrs. Bench was crying. Someone said the President had been killed and we were sent home. I told my Mom and she turned on the TV.
