Bout time HD did something besides same ole same ole... that has been their shtick for far too long.
They've tried before and it never works, the V-Rod, Buell, and the recent Sportster XR1200. We'll see how well this is received, it will depend on dealer support. They're used to selling $20,000 touring bikes so these 750s might be seen as just bait-and-switch bikes to get 'em in the door. I can hear the salesmen now "...oh, yea those are the new foreign market bikes, not real Harleys."
I'd say your prediction is probably going to turn out to be pretty accurate, OB.
If I may, I beg to differ. I think it will work. It's marketed as an urban moped as opposed to an entry-level HD (although of course it will serve that purpose too).
I think you may also find guys with the big aircraft carriers getting one just for running "errands" etc. It also has the "revolution" engine ... can't be the same as the Sportster.
What sells here does not often do well in Europe and Asia. Example: Full size pickup trucks are by far the best selling vehicles in America and have been for decades...don't see many running around Europe though. Another fact: Harley-Davidson alone owns half the U.S. motorcycle market and they only build cruisers and touring bikes. These are not entry-level inexpensive bikes they have a very high profit margin (34% est). All the other manufacturers combined fight for the remaining 50% of the market. Harley has developed these new small displacement liquid cooled bikes for the foreign market, that they decided to offer them for sale in the U.S. is just a test and perhaps the beginning of a new line based on the V-Rod engine. We may see the larger displacement Revolution engine in future cruiser or touring bikes. Imagine if Harley built a bike like the Triumph Trophy SE with an updated Revolution engine...
