The only thing that might kill it is if: A- the bikes for the U.S. market are not built in one of the U.S. plants B- the arrogant salesmen at Harley dealerships (not all) treat these new potential customers like crap because they don't want a Fat Boy or an Ultra classic.
I grew up in a time when 500's and 650's where the standards of the day and the big bikes were 750's. You're right, I've been in Harley dealerships where they act like you are not a real rider unless you are interested in their top tier bikes. The sport needs entry level bikes and I think it is smart of Harley to offer some within their brand, it builds brand loyalty. Look at what Honda is doing with their new line of 500's. I learned to ride on a Yamaha DT250, then bought an RD350, then an XT500, then an XS650, then anXS750. Yamaha all the way, they provided me a ladder for upward mobilility.
