it would be nice if they did bump up the displacement on the existing motor. It has already been proven that these motors can take up to 1200cc without coming apart. For the factory to do a bore and stroke of the existing motor to the 989 cc would put cranks, rods and pistons at a (hopefully) lower cost than after market. Allowing the older bikes to upgrade 
maybe some other cams too.
