Woke up a week ago basically deaf in one ear. Had never heard of such a thing happening but apparently it is an all to common event. Have had some small amount of hearing return in the ear but per testing is still considered severe hearing loss. Kind of a figurative kick in the head. Music and conversation are now much more difficult. Anyone else here experience this? I have since discovered a nephew and a friend who have had this happen to them.

You did get checked for wax buildup, right? It takes very little wax to settle in the right..err..wrong spot, and the resultant hearing loss can be substantial.

No wax problem here. Have been to ENT, hearing tests the whole mess. Just not much hearing and big loud ringing noise in that ear. Probably either nerve damage or damage to the cilia cells. The worst thing is it was my good ear. Had some long term loss in the other ear (artillery, etc.)

Sorry to hear that, I had a similar experience and got lucky, just a little scrap of wax.

The older fella who used to work for me had hearing in one ear go out a few years ago. He never had the money to look into it. It came back a couple of times. He never has had it looked at.

I've actually had it happen to me before at age 25. Woke up one morning and couldn't hear anything at all out of my left ear. Had it check out the same day and they couldn't find anything wrong, anyway, full hearing came back a few days later and no problems since. Weird, huh?

Well, Troy... I can't say I've had that happen to me but I'm sure it's not easy. Here's hoping your hearing returns to normal soon!!

My line of work. In an adult that's usually the result of trauma (noise) or ototoxicity as a result of drug or chemical contact (that's how Rush lost his hearing, oxycontin is ototoxic). Have you an aminoglycoside drug (usually ends with 'mycin')? Or exposure to chemicals?

Did the Dr. tell you to get some lipoflavonoid. OTC works as a formulation that helps with blood flow to the inner ear. Very effective against the ringing and may help you.
If it doesn't all you spent was 20 bucks to try. I take two every day for Tinnitus. If I stop for a few days the ringing is twice as loud. Motorcycles, wind noise, guns etc cause damage as you know. In my case getting old just tends to suck sometimes.
Sudden loss sounds like blood pressure or lack of in that main vessel to me. The doctor has no idea huh?
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

In the never-ending wave of ED commercials on TV, I see that hearing loss may be one of the not-so-good side effects of Viagra and Cialis.

In all seriousness though, I hope you get it sorted out soon. I get occasional Tinnitus and it's annoying as hell.

that sucks, i know i ended up with Tinnitus in my right ear becasue of my music backgound and liking my monitors way to loud, then years of straight pipes (on the right side) without wearing ear plugs, after i got out of allot of the gigging and better pipes it has gotten better but still have the rining from time to time, i have learned to block it out though, very anoying so no hearing would really suck, hope all goes well for ya sir.

Steve, no it wasn't that either. Have had tinnitus in both ears for years due to pipes, guns, etc. did most of the damage to my left ear (though right handed I shoot left handed). Had gotten used to it to the point I really didn't notice it. But this time the ring is very loud and the hearing is all but gone (right ear). Doc is guessing some kind of nerve damage (blood flow in inner ear or inflammation pinching off the nerve). Anyway I now officially have sudden sensorinueral hearing loss. Some hearing may come back (30% of the case gain some back) or just stay the way it is now. Now do I endure another steroid injection through the ear drum to see if it will help? Not the most pleasant 'procedure' I have ever been through but if it helps its worth a try. Oh well. Hell, I'm old and lucky to get this far with most of my senses. Nephew is in his 30s and a musician and his hearing isn't coming back. Feel for him. OK. Back to the regularly scheduled programming.

I've had a 20% hearing loss in both my ears for most of my life and now it's something like 30-35%. I've had hearing aids but they're so dern expensive I haven't had any for the last 15-20 years since they are not coeverd by most insurance plans. That's why I sometimes set around at rallies and don't know what the heck people are talking about. It sucks when people are laughing at something and you didn't even hear the joke. I recently checked the VA and it seems they provide hearing aids if you can connect to it to work or not being able to communicate with your Dr. etc. So on Sept. 11th I will be fitted for a brand new set of govmnt issued hearing aids. I'm actually getting excited about being able to hear TV shows, people talking etc. So the next time you see me at a rally I may be lauging along with the rest of you. Good luck Troy I hope you get most or at least some of your hearing back.

Hearing loss runs in my family on my mother's side. Both my father and my step father were deaf on my mothers side.

FYI, the first few days things won't sound right. Be patient and keep wearing them. After a few days that effect passes and things will sound fine. Just keep wearing them.

And here I thought it was all those wine coolers you were drinking!
Actually hearing has come back a tiny bit. Guess I will have to get another injection next week.

I've tried the Walgreen's brand of that. It really works. It says it takes 6 months to start working but I noticed the difference in a little over a month. I think I doubled the dose though.

Ear Health Plus from walgreens was my choice for years. I think they stopped stocking it, at least here in Texas.
Yes it does work.

Well it turns out I am one of the lucky 30% who regain some of their hearing. It is nowhere as good as before this whole episode but much better than being mostly deaf in one ear. Tinnitus is still there and quite loud. Am going to try the lipoflavanoid to see it the helps that part.

A friend of mine has discovered an advantage to recently becoming VERY hard of hearing. He simply turns off his hearing aids when his wife starts yelling or his neighbor starts pounding. Not much of a silver lining but at least it's a small plus.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Years back, the ENT I went to stated that with age, men tend to lose the ability to hear higher frequencies, while women tend to lose the ability to hear the lower frequencies. Then he smiled and said that that explained the success of old married couples.
