My steering has been loose for some time now and there is this catch, like a bearing catching in a dimple, right at straight ahead. I also had the 40 mph shake. This stuff was more annoying than troublesome so I didn't do anything about it. Well your post made me decide to change the bearing and, WOW again, did that ever tighten up the front of my bike and for the first time ever I have no 40 mph shake of the handle bars. I didn't realize how bad it was, I just got used to it.
I would suggest everyone get rid of their BB bearings and get the All Balls roller bearings.
