After time and numerous heat cycles, the valve cover gaskets tend to harden and no longer deforms enough to make a perfect seal. I had to change them out on both the bikes I still have. Probably made from the same rubber that is used in our tires, only 5 years old and 1200 miles on the clock, and cracked sidewalls. WTF
