I too have accidently picked the bike up by the oil filter, nicely crushing it. To permanently fix the problem I have ginned up some plans to make a remote oil filter plate that will mount to those 2 tabs on the frame just back of the engine. That puts the filter out of the way and horizontal (thereby easier to drain). I intend to work on this over the winter and will post the how info (assuming it works of course)
