Locally they recently decided, after slashing school budgets, parks and rec, infrastructure, you name it, that the county can afford a $10 million dollar state of the art indoor shooting range for local LEOs as the state range is a burdensome 20 minute drive.
The range will have a 25 meter and 100 meter range. WTF are LEOs doing shooting at 100 meters?
A lot of people don't realize that the transcontinental railroad and the Interstate Highway system were both economic stimulus programs.

It's interesting that some believe that those employed in the public sector are somehow "the new man", without the same flaws all humans have.
Of course we can't build anything like the highway system. The EPA and the environuts would put quick stop to it. Some red bellied barfly might suffer a loss of habitat because of a cloverleaf on I-80. With tens of thousands of miles of pipelines already in use, very safely as a matter of fact, we let of bunch of environuts stop a new pipeline. The same bunch is fighting against domestically produced energy with trumped up scare tactics and downright lies about fracking. Same thing with nuclear power. Unless we stop listening to people who do NOT have the best interests of America at heart we will have ever increasing energy costs, crumbling infrastructure and a crummy economy.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I thought the new gun range was part of the Dept of Justice's center out there. If so, they train LEO's from the entire western half of the state. Operations Center, Classrooms, Dorm. etc., all in one location. They'll probably be training the IRS folks soon (ergo; that 100 meter range.)

Social Security, EPA, IRS, Dept of Edu., Nat. Parks all have their own swat teams and snipers. These depts. have purchased millions of rounds of .40 cal hollowpoints and barrier penetrating 5.56. I sure HOPE some of these trends CHANGE soon. On the bright side, backing up your data is now a waste of time, lose something, call the NSA, they have it.

There's no DOJ involvement mentioned in the county Board of Commissioners review of need and finance report. This is strictly a shooting range. It's being entirely paid for by the county and the entire review process was for county use. There is some mention of recouping some of the costs by making it available to other agencies but it will be the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department shooting range and completely paid for by Buncombe County residents.
I'm guessing you are thinking of the Justice Center Facility on Highway 64 over toward Edneyville. That's where they go now and all the facilities you mentioned are either there already or in the planning process.

Yes, the Justice Center is what I was thinking of. That was supposed to be state-of-the-art. Sounds like Buncombe is preparing for something. Ya'll expecting an influx of crime? Zombie Apocalypse?
We used to have a running joke that the LEO's in one of our local small towns, never went to the range. No need. Every time there was a problem, they all turned out in force and "shots were fired".

From Patriotism and the sacrifice of the founding fathers, quickly to Vietnam, The affordable health care act, politicians and now are we at the the Highway system, a gun range and back to politicians?
