Not talking Carlton's social or political attitudes. His metro-sexual demeanor and his dress.

He picked a style, preppy, and did it to the 9s without deviation. The Hipster has the same compulsion. If its not Hip they simply can't deviate.

Some call it compulsion , some call it personal style or aesthetic. But, Carlton, as well as Micheal J. Fox's characters were extreme parodies of "preppy". The term "preppy" is actually a slightly derogatory word to those who wear ivy clothing. The first time it was used in pop-culture was Ali MacGraw to Ryan O'Neal in 1970 film "Love Story", it was not meant as a compliment from a working class girl. "Preppy" meant old money, elite prep school shoe in at an ivy league college, entitlement. Also note that Ryan O'Neal's character doesn't wear "GTH" ivy clothing. GTH clothing is meant for leisure time or vacations, not every day. Unfortunately, in the eighties GTH ivy morphed into "peppy" and became what most are familiar with. Carlton is a perfect example.
