Dobbie Gillis was a 1950s, early 60's "preppy" dresser, everyone was, button downs, kalkis or 501s and weejuns or split toe loafers. I think you are thinking of Maynard G.Krebs. I never thought of Dylan as a hipster

Dwight, I'd have to agree. "Barry Lyndon" most likely his apex in acting. "Love Story" was a date movie, besides it had Ali MacGraw A better MacGraw film was "Good-bye Columbus". Did I mention it had Ali MacGraw in it?

What did they expect, a film written and directed by NORMAN MAILER with Ryan O'Neal in the lead. One can only imagine the "catering" tab on that set.

Man you guys know your old movies and TV.
I hate to be the one, but Triumph is the hipster bike , and always was. Just accept it.
Especially you guy who are way too cool to be associated with hipsters. Its time to check ya mirrors. If ya say stuff like dont try to put me into a catagory. You probably are the hipsters of which we speak.
Ya bunch of hippsters.

Dwight, funny you should bring up McQueen, he is not only a Triumph icon, but he is also a ivy (preppy) icon, admittedly with a California flare. Other ivy icons include Pres. Bush the elder, Cary Grant, Paul Newman, JFK and Bobby, Clark Gable. The list goes on, of course in about 1967 all bets were off, after that everyone wanted to dress like the Byrds or James Taylor.

Wait, Mac! Gotta say I've never thought of McQueen, Paul Newman and Clark Gable as "Ivy League" or "Preppy". George H. W. Bush, Cary Grant and the Kennedy boys, yes of course, but not the formerly listed guys.
McQueen was more the "sullen loner", Newman was more "Blue Collar", and Gable was presented as the epitome of American masculinity in the first half of the 20th Century.
Nope, definitely not "Preppy" in their cases.

Dwight, I'm talking about personal aesthetics of dress. This may shock you, but even James Dean in his private life attired himself in traditional ivy league American clothing. Newman was actually an Ivy leaguer, Harvard I believe.
This shouldn't surprise anyone Ivy style was mainstream men's attire post WWII till the late 60s. With the GI bill enabling the middle class to attain college educations Ivy or collegiate style clothing was no longer just for the eastern elites.

Oh, okay. You meant in their private lives, not their typical on-screen personas then. Gotcha. (...however, remember, back in the day ALL Americans dressed much nicer than how we slobs do today, RIGHT?!)

Right, in the 60s most public schools had dress codes. FYI, I sitting here watching "Rebel Without A Cause" on TCM. First day of high school Dean wears a tweed jacket, tie and penny loafers. As I type the "chicken" scene just ended, who can forget Dean's famous red GTH Barracuda jacket.

Triumph Bonnevilles are most definitely the hipster go to bike for the hipster with money. Boston, nyc, philly u see them tight pant, kustom painted vintage helmet turds riding them or a sporty 883.
I personally think 99% of the custom bike scene are hipsters too. They all ware the same vests and have they're slighly to highly offensive t shirts on driving their shovel or iron head around with the tallest sissy bar they can have made for them. Oh and they want to"kill a hipster'
Thats why i jokingly call mine hipster bait, cause when i had the blue and white paint on my scrambler tank it would gather a crowd of hipsters at the bars.

Here is an App. to find hipster concentrations, among other hings, in some major cities. Check out the relationship between hipsters and PBR concentrations. http://www.yelp.com/wordmap/portland/hipsterI'm not sure a blue and white Scrambler is so much a hipster magnet as an everybody magnet. Triumphs tend to make everyone curious. I some times meet up with friends at the famous Bryants BBQ in the inner city, 13th and Brooklyn. It's not unusual to see hip hop youths admiring my Triumphs, pants down around their asses, boxers in the breeze.

Considering the time period, the Krebs character more likely represents the Beat Generation, Kerouac, Burroughs and Ginsberg, etc., bohemian hedonism, "beatniks". In time the hippie movement while inspired by it engulfed it, individuality was the first casualty.

Think about it: how many new bikes still look like real bikes, not Transformers? How many new bikes are still the lightweight, stripped down, classic look? The answer is the Bonneville-engined Triumphs, the 750 Guzzis & the Royal Enfield. Ok,ok! Credit where credit it's due- the Sportsters. But I still don't like 'em.
You forgot URAL
A former co-worker drove his Yural by to show me one day. It has the side-car too. Really cool bike, but I noticed his neutral, and oil lights are the same ones as on my America! Anyone notice this too?

That was really cool. I looked at several cities. I also noted I do not live in a "hipster" neighborhood.
