Indian Vintage really gets me going. I love that look.

They are gonna sell a lot of bikes.

I love the Chief Vintage in Springfield Blue with the tan leather, but we're going with Indian Red.

I think the bikes came out pretty decent. I totally agree with Z on these. I hope they can last. They are never gonna get the Harley guys away from HD but for people with an open mind or people like us who like something different, they might make enough to keep going. If they can last for 10 years or maybe less you'll start to change some HD guys over, maybe. We'll see!

I disagree with you about the Harley guys. Indian has everything that keeps the Harley guys in the Harley camp but even more so. American made, ancient motorcycle name, a cultural icon with not a little kitsch factor, even more of a classic look and a chance to have all that without looking like everything else at bike night. Barring something unforeseen I think they will sell everything they can produce.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I think you are right Larry. Way too much interest early in for them not to be a hit. Really good looking bikes with a ton of torque and not trying to be anything else but an Indian.

Its a homerun. I disagree on the heritage part. 45 years give or take as a dead company. No DNA there just the fender ornament. But they came out really retro cool looking with their own driveline. HD riders will buy them and/or accept them for the inherent street cred they have as an American bike.

I sure hope so.

I'm gettin' really pissed now that SOOO..MANY are jumpin' on the Triumph bandwagon, even if it's the vintage side. The LAST thing I want is for Triumph to get so popular as the new "go-to" brand for those wanting to escape the sea of Har-ley that ours gets lost in the crowd.

Erle, I don't see any more retro Triumphs now than I saw 5 years ago in Texas. I think their sales are slumping, not growing.

The vintage bikes being used for custom and restorations projects appears to be "Off the charts".

It's the Triumph name that I wouldn't want to become as "mundane" as H/D.

I disagree a little with Larry. One of the core elements of owning a Hardly is the "group thing". Plenty of the HD riders I know really don't know that much about bikes in general. They ride HD cause it is the "cool bike everybody agrees is cool". They talk about being an individual, then buy the same bike that every body else has to be cool. That's one of the things that seperates the HD crowd from the Triumph crowd, most all of the Trumpet riders I know really are individualistic. We LIKE having a different kind of bike, that is still cool. We walk the walk. Just my observation. Although I think there will be a few HD riders gravitate over to the Indian cycle camp, I think the same people will buy the new Indian that buys the Triumph. Individual types that appreciate the classic lines and history.

HD made about 5 million bikes in the last 20 years. If Indian got 1%. 1 out 100 of them. 50,000 bikes.

I don't know how its going to work out but I bet they sell over 5,000 for 2014 and could hit 10,000. There is a big interest in these bikes. The style, the national brand, and the 111 motor. A total commitment from a company with enough money to keep the name up and running.

I don't think HD needs to worry. But I think Victory needs to be a bit worried. For the same reason folks buy Triumph they buy Victory. To not be part of the crowd. The Indian does that very well. Polaris could take a customer off of one bike and put them on another.

I wonder how that will play out.

Victory and Indian can coexist, its all abotu defining the brands as clearly different. Victory needs to develop its design language more clearly, and to a more timeless manner, away from the quickly dated Ness stuff, in fact to make the bike that is quickly customizable would be a neat sell. Whereas with Indian, the legacy look already carries it, and with the past bikes to draw from and create a present day look, they design language is there to play with. They shouldnt cross over against each other, but be clearly unique choices(as they really are now).

Interesting discussion.

Now that Polaris has Victory and Indian in their corporate stable, I am curious to see which unique direction they go in.

It's a nice time to be a motorcycle rider.

+1 on this, as in the Sheryl Crow song where she says your an origional baby, look around and there's about a million more.....the Trump riders I know are different (in a good way)...it will be interesting to see if a cult of the Indian develops along the lines of Triumph or HD....

FYI, if any of you are planning to do a demo ride at the NJ Indian dealer, or any Indian dealer, you'll want to call and make an appointment ASAP.

Yes Moe, it would have been nice to have heard the bike.
I thought the same thing as I rode. It was one of the quietest motors I have ever heard. I assume Polaris wants you to invest in some pipes.
The bike had endless power, right from the first twist.
Fit and finish is beautiful.
However, the heat coming off the engine is immense.
My calves, and bottom were baking.
Also, at $19k - I dunno. That's an awful lot of scratch.
I had just as much fun, and power, when I demo'ed the $12K Victory 8 Ball, with the 106 engine.
For a few more bucks ($22K) the Cheiftan, full bagger is magnificent! It's a sofa, with a laptop!

Thanks for the review, I'm jealous! Looks like you had a nice day for it too.

I'm not surprised by the engine heat but I am surprised about the pipes. I've read that the exhaust note is very nice.

Thanks again, my demos are next Friday & Saturday.

Two weeks ago I would have have thought that too. I am not so sure now. They may have hit a homerun with this. If a dealer comes to within a hundred miles of me I think I may be on the Indian Vintage. If nothing else for wall art. I think they are beautiful.

I would've hung around past the 30 second mark if I'd heard a motor and it's shift points. Just my opinion though.

Glad you got your demo though.

Hey Mike, Google is a very useful tool, try it somtime.

The deadline for mailed entries was today. The announcement should be within 7 days, or by August 26.

There was also a similar contest on the History.com site which ended last week. No word on the announcement date for that Indian.

Uh yeah, I had googled, bingit, wikipedit, talked with in-laws, outlaws etc. and came up with the same vague timeframe you listed. The cut off date for registration is firm, the giveaway is, well, a bit vague

ABS, keyless ignition, real leather, 117 lbs. of torque, serious good paint.

There are cheaper bikes just like cars. An Audi cost more than a Kia.

Indian is in a class all by itself. 111 CID of classy transportation. I thought Polaris was going to screw them up. They hit it out of the park with these bikes.

Well, I spent a good deal of the day at the NJ Indian demo event and I didn't hear anyone say anything bad about them. In fact, the response I heard was unanimously positive. The worst thing I could say about the Chief was, it's not a Vision. But it's not trying to be.

If you're planning on going, the route sucks. The dealer is in a congested area on Route 22, aka hell. They had a VERY well organized police escort that mad you feel like you were riding a motorcycle in a presidential motorcade, but without anyone on the grassy knoll. It was as safe and fun as you can get in that part of NJ.

Also, if you don't have an appointment to ride, you may be out of luck. Even in you THINK you may have an appointment, don't be surprised if you don't. Other than that, the folks at the dealer are great and it was a good time. Free food, what’s not to like.

There were a lot of Harley and Victory riders there, but most brands and styles of motorcycle were represented at the demo.

Regarding the Indians, they are rolling works of art. Fit & finish is excellent. The motor is seriously torquey. We got to wind it out getting onto the Parkway, and it gets up and goes.

Ergonomics are very good. Plenty of leg room without sitting in the "praying mantis" position. The Chief seems to fit everyone in every size and shape imaginable. The leather saddle was very comfortable. I even put my big butt on the passenger seat, and it was pretty good. My biggest complaint is that the top of the windshield is in my line of sight. Other windshields are available, or you could have this one cut to size.

The suspension is very good. I kept looking for pot holes and uneven pavement to test it out, and the bike handled it all well.

You won’t think this bike weighs 800 pounds or more. It’s a big machine, but at no time did I feel like it was heavy. The Indian handles well for a heavy cruiser. I tried to drag a floorboard or 4 at various times, with no luck. YMMV.

I’ll be returning tomorrow to do a 2-up ride with my bride. I’ll give you her 2 cents after that.

My wife did the test ride today also....she said the suspension on the Classic was "like riding on a cloud". Ditto to everything you noted about the event, Kevin; she said the "motorcade" style of the whole thing was cool. She isn't giving up her HD Deluxe anytime soon, but if the Indian was two tone like the older ones....who knows?

I saw the new Indians at their Sturgis launch. Outstanding fit and finish which is to be expected since these early bikes are being very slowly carefully assembled and inspected for that first impression. I like them but when my wife asked "would you buy one" I said no. Just not my style. But that doesn't matter because I wouldn't buy a Harley Ultra Classic either and they were everywhere at Sturgis. Indian is just over styled to me, all that body work from the engine back reminds me of a big fat scooter. Great engine but the lightest version is over 800 pounds. And there are no dealers in the state of Virginia the nearest to home is over 230 miles away. This is a big problem for Indian. I know they want to make the bikes exclusive but if there are no dealers it's going to be kind of hard to sell them.
