Since I live in Northern Alabama, and with the recent history of tornados and the even more recent activity in Oklahoma, all this has rekindled my wife's fears. So.. I just placed an order for a new in garage shelter. 5 1/2' wide X 5' deep and 7' long. It's got a long back order but should be in by middle of July. Wasn't too expensive but I could've bought a really nice used BA or SM for its price.

What's y'all's thought bout this?

How much to rent a backhoe, pop a ditch, lay a short section of large culvert, backfill and fab a trapdoor?

In our travels through tornado country, we noticed a lot of billboard ads for storm shelters, and evidence of underground shelters in folks yards.

That is a very sobering sight.

I think you made a wise investment, and I hope all you ever use it for is to keep beer cool. Best wishes and be safe.

Ryk, I thought about doing it myself, but we wanted one undergrounfd in our garage, but with my lack of experience on a backhoe, and all the permits, materials and time i thought this would be the better route.

Chad, hope I don't "truely" need it either, but its a good peice of mind for my wife and son. She gets terrified anytime we have bad weather now. Funny thing is she's fine with Hurricanes.

Kevin, already got a beer fridge in the garage, but I got a feeling this is gonna make a great oil change pit. (Just not for the bike.)

Since we rode past a funnel cloud in MO, and had Hurricane Sandy come through last year, I have a more profound respect for Mother Nature.

Here's at tip - if you're ever out on 2 wheels and bad weather is coming through, find shelter before you're in it. You won't regret it.

Ride safe, be safe all.

Take the bike out of the equation. Storm shelter for peace of mind. If I bought things with that frame of mind (this or a bike) I would have a bunch of bikes and nothing else!

I know right, sometimes it really sucks being responsible and reasonable. Here's to more bikes in the future.

Two years ago, we replaced our septic system.

It cost like putting a nice motorcycle into the ground! OUCH!

I've been seeing a lot of these surface anchored storm shelters. I don't know, man. I've seen 100 year old trees with 3 tons of roots and dirt popped out of the ground like a cork out of a cheap wine bottle. I just don't know what kind of anchor can stop a tornado if it's leaving a 20 foot crater where it pulled a tree out of the Earth.

If I'm facing one I'm going below ground.

I think putting a shelter in place is smart. Peace of mind is worth it even if you never use it. Strange house fact that I learned after I built my octagon shaped house. I was wandering around the back highways in Ill. a while back, and came across a small state park. I went on in just to look around and the centerpiece of the park was an octagonal barn. It seems that they were kinda popular in the Pensylvania area in the 1800s. A history of this kind of structure was on a sign by the barn. One of the things the history noted was that eight sided structures were considered to be "tornado resistant", due to it's shape. Evidently, there has never been a reported loss due to tornado of such a structure ever. When I related this to the wife, she laughed and said, " Yeah, with all the steel reinforcement you put in this place, it'll probably just be pushed over on it's side, in one piece". Anyway, I hope somebody is right. The d**m insurance company cancelled my home insurance two months ago because it wasn't "completed in time, so doesn't qualify for "building insurance". And, they won't insure it the regular way cause it's "unfinished'. Typical insurance co. catch 22.

Heck, one can buy Fold Form and make a pretty simple structure for not too much money. It goes together nearly as simple as Legos and you add in rebar and then the concrete, simple and not too expensive. If I was building a house, I would consider for my basement and all exterior walls. The house is as quiet as a bank vault and as secure.

I lived through several tornadoes and never had a shelter, dont have one now. Cant say I blame a fella for wanting one though. You can actually build one relatively cost effective for most living situations.
