If you mean the gangster pic, my grandson managed to sneak a toy gun to school in his backpack. He is 6 and they called the police had a big investigation and when I got there they wouldn't give the toy back told me they had to hold it for evidence. They also suspended him from school, all that for an orange piece of plastic. He is already learning gun safety. He can already tell you to make sure a gun is not loaded if he plans to handle it and to point it at the ground while carrying it.once he show a little more responsibility I'll start teaching him the parts and get him out with my .22.

If he already learned gun safety, then he should also have learned what "zero tolerance" is. By your own account, he "snuck" it in because he knew it was wrong, and the suspension was warranted. Zero tolerance is just that.

In the current environment, I wouldn't advocate a kid bringing anything resembling a toy gun to school. Many schools have a zero tolerance policy on this, as evidenced by the crazy stories we hear in the news about kids getting punished for chewing a pop tart into the shape of a gun. If a kid was caught bullying another kid with a pop tart gun, it would be curtains I tell you. Curtains.

He knows he is not to take any toys to school and was punished for it. I think getting the police involved for an ORANGE plastic toy in the possession of a 6 year old is a bit over the top. Not as bad as I have seen though, I have seen kids taken out in handcuffs, little kids.

My kid took a knife to school last year, got caught with it, and was not suspended. I chewed the principal's ass for not making an example of him.

ahhhhhhhh, but the fact remains that 1976 yearbooks contained images of many future "first among equals" world leaders, captains of industry, full heads of hair & even ba.com moder-tators ..... jh

Any time you hear "Zero Tolerance" substitute "Zero Common Sense" and "Zero Discretion" and you'll usually be right on the money. "Educators" who wonder why they are held in ever lowering esteem need only to look at situations like this to figure it out.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Well, I can agree with HALF of what ya said, Larry. "Zero Tolerance" is a dumb policy that leaves out any resolution using common sense. As to your second point, teachers might be slipping in the esteem given to them, but that's not because they aren't, for the vast majority of them, dedicated professionals. It's because parents at home and society in general are giving them an impossible load to carry. They not only have to teach the given subject, they have to teach right from wrong in the most basic sense of the word, they have to teach the kids how to get along cause their parents are socially inept themselves, and finally, they have to respond, politely, to the "my little darling" parents, who have raised children largely inept in social skills and lack basic responsibility towards themselves and society. Parents have little esteem for teachers because they have little self respect (not to be confused with self love) themselves. I know. I've been there. Before anybody critisizes teachers, take a day and observe a class room.

It wasn't a parent who tossed a little kid out of school for biting his pop tart into the shape of a gun, or wearing a T-shirt with a military emblem with a gun in the image, or drawing pictures of guns. Sure there are some great teachers but the education establishment and lawyers have tied their hands to the point where they are powerless. The US is continuing it's slide down the international educational rankings and we are doing this kind of stuff?

See, now it appears we DO agree! As long as you're talking the ESTABLISHMENT (i.e. overpaid superintendants and gutless principals) and lawyers looking for their next paycheck I'm with ya! But then again, as I always add to any comment about lawyers, they wouldn't have the success they have without greedy, "get rich quick" clients and numbskull, common sense impaired judges!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I HAVE TO LISTEN TO MY WIFE WHO IS A (oops) High School English Teacher. She cannot stand all the Admin crap, or the parents who lie and defend their cheating little Ba$ta----. Even when she has them red handed. Or the Kid, whose dad is on the board, gets kicked off the baseball team and then gets Athlete of the year! What the heck kind of message does this send? AS to common sense,,, yep it’s gone by the wayside, but it is not really the teachers it’s the admin, who by the way are so scared of being sued they over react or under react. It really is because everyone thinks teachers should be the parents so the parents can be A: Such professionals they have no time for their children or B:overwhelmed middle class who just try but come up short and C: Parents who are so messed up themselves they cannot navigate their way out of a wet paper bag. (Lets not forget the NON English speaking students who will not learn at the same rate and many, not all, have not been able to pass all these D!!!! "test" the states require. Test written by Ivy League teachers who probably never saw a real school with real street kids and gangs, and yes there are some crappy teachers who do make the news and make the good ones look bad. Just like a rice rocket squid makes all motorcyclist look bad. My wife finishes each year on the verge of a nervous breakdown and swears she is not going back. If there were any possible way to afford it, I would tell her to quit and just do a B.S. min wage job part time. SO TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO COMPLAIN ABOUT TEACHERS,,,, DO AS ARSTARN SUGGESTED. Kids are little angels,, BS! If they think they can lie and win then they will. Even "good" kids. I say my 3 kids are good, but I know I have been bambooseled a time or two. How many times a month do you see your wife break down and start crying due to the inhuman amount of stress on her? This stress is what breaks a lot of teachers, 1 - 3 things happen. They walk out and have a break down never to teach again, or they say the He!! With it and coast. And luckily most will just hope that summer will be enough to decompress. But they really don’t get 3 months off. They have to keep their certs up to date so they have to attend summer seminars. My wife being an English teacher has I think 12 to 16. YOU tell me where the vacation is??? I am powerless to help her with any of it. I think the spouse of a teacher has a hard job. Trying to keep the partner sane. They rank right up there with a military spouse. And if they happen to be both,, add a bit more stress on to it. I feel much better now.

65 graduated 82 and school as we know it now will be a thing of the past in as little as 20 years or less. And i mean that in the "school building and the like" heck in many parts of the world the buildings are already gone in lieu of home school on the internet and the world wide web machine. I feel sorry for teachers i do, kids today feel entitled to everything because we allow it.... my kids call me mr strict.... cause well..... i really am !

Well as far as "Home School" I'm all for it, if it works for ya. We, (well mainly my wife) home school our son. He's about to be 7 in less than 2 weeks, and reads at a 4th grade level, does math in his head (such as 9587-3369) simple multiplication and division, knows more about all types of animals than our vet, knows basic geography, (states and capitals, countries and continents) and can read a map, can kick and throw the crap outta a ball but can catch for sh!t, and he's already one hell-of-a mechanic. Yeah his writing needs improvement and his “blueprints” need refinement, but he’s one scary smart dude. If it sounds like I’m bragging, well its cause I’m one proud Papa. He a very unique small human and I’m just lucky he’s mine. And don’t worry, not raising a psychopath, he’s very social as well, he really likes people and once someone meets him they all love him. BTW if he (or we as a family) decide to he will go to a traditional public school. Right now I think it would just hold him back. Just the other day while helping me fix Grampa's tiolet he look at the shower head and said "Those nossels look like spinnerets", I said "What!" , Jack- "Spinnerets, the part on a spider near its butt where the web comes from". Scary Smart!

Oh bull shine. He is six and zero tolerence for toy guns is bullplop nonesence.

We home school ours. My 20 year old has finished college now and is out on his own with only minor help from home and the other three are on an early track too. Home school rules.

Oh bull shine. He is six and zero tolerence for toy guns is bullplop nonesence.
you're entitled to your opinion, but don't say you teach someone gun safety without also explaining the ramifications of what a zero tolerance policy is. if they aren't old enough to know the consequences, maybe they aren't old enough to handle a gun to begin with. don't like it? tough sh¡t, that's the world we live in now where shooting up a school is the cool thing to do
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

Shure teach them to not question the facists lest they be punished extremely. Teach them to obey not think. Break those kids and break them good. It takes a true moron of epic proportions to call the police on a child for having a toy gun that is so clearly a toy that it would truly be an act of stupidity beyond any explaination to think other wise. Why would it not be ok to take little Jimmy to the office, take the toy, call Mom and Dad, and explain the reason for not allowing toy guns at school and deciding on a reasonable punishment. Like he has to give up recess for a couple of days and do extra class work instead.
No they had to go totally stupid in the matter.
If little fella's family intends to have guns in the home, then it is paramount to teach him gun safety.
Has it ever occurred to anyone that ever since zero tolerance more kids have been shot at school than before zero tolerance? Has zero toleance ever worked? Ever? I think that every time some tyrant imposed zero tolerance it has invariably cause direct and uncontrollable rebellion.
How can an institution teach children to be intellegent when they make well beyond stupid decisions?
They took a teachable moment and turned it into a fiasco.
This type of ineptitude and gross ignorance is exactly why I home school my children.
Schools are no longer about education and learning. They are conformity factories.

I think it was an extremely teachable moment. I think lessons were learned by all the kids involved in these situations, and their classmates as well. I'd love to hear any reason these kids should ever have any respect for the adults who made or enforced these policies, or the politics or attitudes that spawned them.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

All I know is my grand kids know the difference between real guns and fake guns and know to make sure any gun they intend to handle is not loaded and never ever point one at any living thing. We have not gotten into self defense or hunting yet, that comes much later. They are not handling real guns yet but they know where mine are and are allowed to look at them if they ask and I am present. They are starting to learn the parts of the gun now.
I think any rule with no thought behind it is bad. I also think making such a big deal out of an orange piece of plastic is over the top insane and counter productive.
I learned all I need to know about life by killing smart people and eating their brains. Eat right ,Exercise ,Stay fit, Die Anyway!

Yep Chad, I suppose there might be a kernel of truth in this statement of yours here, BUT as Dave and Rich and Scott have already mentioned earlier in this thread, the reason for THIS is probably NOT nearly the complete fault of the public institutions involved in educating the American youth of today, but is IN FACT most likely the fault of all those kids who's PARENTS have failed to instill in their offspring the concept of modicum "conformity" to the idea of decorum in a public environment, such as in a CLASSROOM! And thus it has been left TO those institutions to waste their time in "enlightening" the little darlings to THIS social concept.
And so, the NEXT time you might wish to express your dismay at those in the institutions charged with educating the youth of today, you MAY wish to instead entertain the thought of addressing these concerns of yours directly to all your neighbors and fellow citizens who apparently haven't a clue about how raise THEIR children in a proper manner, which DOES mean to certain extent and in some respect to "CONFORM" their behavior to standards conducive to the process of learning.
(...OH, and btw, I'm a graduate of a California public high school in the year 1970, and in MY day, boy's haircuts could NOT be over their collar, their sideburns could NOT be further down the side of their faces than their earlobes, no facial hair was allowed, AND you could NOT wear bluejeans to school...yep, talk about "how times have changed, EH?!...let ALONE the idea of "comformity"!!!)

Well Larry, all I can say here is that if MAYBE the son of that moronic(and ahem, "law-abiding") woman in Connecticut who thought it was a "good idea" to teach HER mentally and emotionally challenged son the "sport of shooting" in order to somehow instill some purpose in his limited little life(hmmm, think maybe givin' the kid a tennis racquet INSTEAD and maybe havin' him learn THAT sport "might've" been a BETTER idea, LADY???..HUH???) would have been overheard talking on some school bus about this subject, AND if somebody might have reported this incident to someone in authority, AND if said authority THEN would've maybe brought this to the attention of said moronic mother in efforts of having her be on the alert for her own safety and the safety of others, then do ya think it's possible those 26 kids and adults might be still walkin' around today? (...nope, I suppose we'll never know the answer to this, will we...WHICH of course IS the point of my argument here)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
