I have a Playstation but the new X box is scary. The mic and webcam always stay on, even when the system is off so in effect someone can look and listen in your house at any given time. They can send ads at times they think you would be responsive. If you own a game you can not loan it to a friend unless that friend wants to pay full retail price to play it. Your system must be connected to the internet or the system will stop working. That is just highlights.

I just can't imagine buying something like that and having it in my home. I wouldn't want that in my home if it was given to me!

+1. Corporations clearly know that they can make us jump through any hoop they want or inconvenience us to any degree if we want the product bad enough. Add in the various monopolies on products and they have just as much power over us as we let them. Kinda makes a slightly paranoid person like myself worry a little. (Luckily, most of what people nowadays consider essentials, I couldn't care less about.)(Out of most of the loops and lovin it!)

We're all just machines anyway, sending transmissions subconsciously , they're already tapped into to your thoughts, ears and eyes.

A while back some folks found out the computers the 'charter' school had issued to their kids could have their webcams turned on remotely by school personnel (charter school personnel don't have to be certified or another of other checks in NC).
They were not amused.
I wonder how many creepo videos THAT resulted in?

As far as the Xbox goes not joking even a little bit, that is an enormous invasion of privacy.

I don't know. In the post I made the noted webcams were discovered to be controlled remotely when they were turned on in their children's bedrooms in the evening.
Personally, I wouldn't have been OK with that.

Hate to challenge the Left's talking points, but it's not limited to Charter Schools. Public schools are guilty as well.

Google and Bing searches found another incident in NJ - also a Public school. I was unable to find any mention of this happening in Charter schools. That's not to say it's never happened, but certainly doesn't appear to be prevalent enough to be singled out.

They CAN be turned off and should be when not in use. If you have kids who don't know enough to do that then maybe you should watch them closer. If you don't know how to turn them off, ask a kid.

Not the newest Xbox, the cam and mic are always on and the system is required to be always connected to the internet. You can turn the system off but the mic and cam stay on.

Around here, at least, the media frequently, but mistakenly, refers to charter school personnel 'in the news' as "public school teachers". They are only "public" in so much as as they take tax dollars. Again, this is NC and I can't speak for other states, but pretty much anyone can call themselves a charter school teacher and many have.
Probably the most thorough study on the efficacy of charter schools was done not too long ago by Stanford University. It's pretty interesting.

So just purchasing this is the only consent needed for it to function as you speak? 1984 came and went but not away, it's in the background. I bet most who laid down hard money to buy it at the substidized rate they sell these boxes have no idea.

Couldn't you just put a bag over it or does it have...XRay Vision? Like the glasses you could order from the ad in the back of the comic book.

Are we talking about the New XBox One that is not on the market yet and no one not even the Gamer Geeks know what the features are. It's still months away from release.???? I stopped into a gamer store then went on line and that puppy aint no where near ready for consumption.

This is why Ill not be letting the kids upgrade. I even wonder at the sanity of my wife and I's decision to give in and buy the one we have!

If I had any reason to get one, I think I would treat "them" to videos of aliens doing weird alien stuff. Not much chance I would get one though because it wouldn't run my favorite game, 'A Bard's Tail'.
