okay, so i drilled and tapped my bar weights for some mirrors. well... one, successfully. broke a tap off in the other.
can't drill it out, too small. i tried heating them up and beating them further into the bar with no joy. this would have been ideal. tap extractor was a peice of junk and bent. don't spend the twelve bucks on those, and especially don't get expedited shipping on it either. and the weight itself is too hard to drill into to make a jack screw to pull it out (which would also require another, though larger and more robust, risky tapping maneuver).
now i'm super grumpy about it. any suggestions?

Why did you drill them and try to tap them? I bought longer bolts same thread for my bar end mirrors. Now they even make adapters jocker has them that are the same thread and then you bolt a mirror on them.

Call your local machine shop and locate someone who has a EDM setup. EDM stands for Electrical Discharge Machining. They could remove your problem (broken tap) and you wouldn't even have to remove your grip. Basically a precision Air Arcing metal removal process using water instead of compressed air to vacate the unwanted material, with total heat control.

Dang Ryk, I never knew you were so freakishly smart.
Another option, (if you have a small amount of the bit stick out) may be to weld (or JB weld) a small bolt to the bit and try to back it out.
Just thinking out loud.

Wow man, so you got bar end mirrors but the bolt was the wrong size or thread for the tapped bar end gusset inside the bar. Ok sometimes if you are lucky when you start to drill them with a reverse drill bit they will come out on their own. If not its get a bigger bit and drill it out and tap for bigger bolt. Or get those rubber plug type bar end weights for the mirrors to mount to.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Chad he broke the tap off in the hole, drill bits do not provide much progress 'cept a ruined point or a shattered bit. Taps are generally a skosh harder than a drill bit.

He's from the North.
The July 2013 (issue #58) of Rodz magazine (www.olskoolrodz.com) has a GREAT article titled "Product Evaluation: Broken Bolt Extractors".
They evaluated virtually EVERY type of extractor marketed, and as I already knew, DO NOT use the imported, cheap reverse spiral tapered extractors, or left-handed drill bits. They ONLY work when it's JUST A LITTLE too hard to grip the broken bit/bolt/screw.
"For small screws, the Micro-Grabits are the best choice."
"For larger bolts, ...the old standby Irwin Reverse Spiral, Pro Reverse Spiral, Reverse Serrated, and Drill-Outs all performed satisfactorily... Out of them, I'd rate the Drill-Outs top dog."
"For big stuff, try a common tool in the plumbing industry called an internal pipe wrench will work great."

Erle, the man has a broken tap, not a broken off bolt, if they make some kind of drill bit that will cut a tap, I want to buy one. As already mentioned, sometimes you get lucky and can weld a nut on what's showing, not that taps are considered a weldable alloy, so the choices are, weld a nut on it, a tap removal tool, bust it out with a punch in pieces, or pay a machine shop to blow it out of there with a EDM. Taps are harder than a wedding night you know what, that's why they break so easy, they have no give.

Sure, BUT if you read the article, you'll see it addresses broken screws, broken bolts, broken drill bits, and broken taps.
As we all know, the chances of breaking either is pretty much equal.
They also give tips on keeping your drill as close to parallel to the axis of the broken piece as possible, and using a "T-Handle" in lue of a drill/driver or wrench/ratchet, to keep equal pressure on the extractor.
A read that SHOULD NOT BE MISSED!

Well my two cents worth is its starting to sound like you should just get a new set of bars. By the time you try some or all methods suggested it will probably be cheaper.

"Taps are harder than a wedding night you know what" Maybe. Who waits for such a formal event? lol. I busted a fork pinch bolt. Yep extractor too. Brought it to a machine shop and they got it out and they didn't have to heli coil it either. Hum I wonder if Chad used one of them thar EDM thingamajigs.

Whats a skosh?
Slang for minute amount, possibly Yiddish in origin. In Hillbilly speak, it would amount to roughly 2-1/2 Frog-hairs and we all know how small a diameter Frog-hair is. As used in a sentence," That girl s behind is finer than Frog-hair split three ways". I hope I cleared that up for you.

Well if you don't have any luck getting the dern thing out, and before you go to the drastic route of getting new bars, you could always take a hacksaw and lob off about 1" of each side and start over, definitely make lane splitting easier too.
