The Mosquito is largely forgotten these days, but it was really something during the war. For a time, it was the fastest fighter in the RAF, even though it was intended to be a light bomber. Some versions had no guns to allow a bigger bomb load. The idea was that guns weren't needed because the axis had nothing that could catch it.
It was made of wood to conserve materials needed for the existing fighter designs. This had a nice side effect in being the first 'stealth' airplane. The Germans didn't have the magnetron, so their radar worked on a longer wavelength, making the twin Merlins nearly invisible and completely missing the wood airframe.
This all reminds me of a time when I was walking home from school and heard a low whistling hum. I looked up and saw a flight of P38's from the nearby airbase practicing low formation flying.
