Nah Will, we just like to pick on HD 'round here. But all in good fun. A couple of guys I work with here are gong to Panama City this coming weekend for "Thunder on the Beach". I'm guessing either they can't handle the 8 hour ride or they're afraid the bike won't make it. So another guy is letting them borrow the trailer.

Thats when rallies became no fun any more. We use to ride, camp and it was about motorcycles and riders. The only folk who towed was the bands, beer providers, and the foodies. Now more people towed their bike than rode, and they look down on the guy who brought a bed roll instead of an RV. More people come now but fewer can actually ride.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Ain't that the truth. When we went to Sturgis in '08, I saw trailers with South Dakota tags!

I go to the Americade "Touring" rally most years. It's in the Adirondack Mountains in June where the weather can be cold and wet. There are lots of trailers there. The difference is they are being towed by motorcycles, not carrying them.

We put the KLRs on a trailer to take them out to AZ last month (about 2000 miles each way). The only other time I've trailered a bike was when we moved from Colorado in 1985. It would have been hard to load the whole household on a Suzuki 650 Tempter (yep, I'm the guy who bought one).

I rode with a HD riders club for 10 years although I did not own a HD.
As many of these friends, myself included, aged into our 60's our health started to preclude long rides for some of us. However, we still love to ride and to ride in different locations not just around our home locals. So trailering has become our solution to reach distant ride sights then riding the local roads and scenery.
I went from an 800 lb. (loaded 2 up at 1300 lbs.) Yamaha Road Star to a much lighter Triumph Speedmaster in a further effort to continue riding since having both hips replaced 6 years ago.
I used to ride to Sturgis, Wisconsin Dells, the Ozarks, Colorado, etc. from Iowa now I trailer and still enjoy the local scenery and rider fellowship.

There is no real animosity toward Harley or Harley riders. These guys just like to fan the flames of the old rivaly from the old dirt track racing days.
While older folks who use to ride like mad do trailer their bikes. I think the jeering is about middle aged wanna be bikers who live less than 4 hours away from the destination.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

I have a few family and friends who have bikes. Can rarely get any one of them to ride more than an hour or so. But I have a young cousin who is just 15 who now has his own bike. Nice fella. He can only ride if a licensed bike rider is riding alongside him, so he's pretty game to go. I expect he and I will rack up some miles this year.

Nope, no hard feelings at all, I got some pretty good friends who own HD and a few that actually ride. 
This partituclar fella is one that normally actually rides. He bought his bike from his uncle and put about 40k on it in the first 3 years. And he was planing on riding it to this rally but supposed to have really bad T-storms on the way down there and he didn't want his ole lady getting wet.

That's why I quit going to Sturgis. I hear there is a trailer storage a few miles out of town complete with a bin of dust to make your bike look like you rode in.
The LAST time I went to Tulare, 2 motor homes pulled up into the camping area (each took up about 8 tent spaces). They opened the electric back panel that doubles as a ramp and unloaded his and hers bikes. Sunday afternoon, they rolled the bikes back up the ramps, having never started them all weekend, and left.
Bike rallies don't seem to be for my kind anymore.

I'm not a fan of bike events that aren't designed around riding. In fact, I only do one charity ride a year - Gooch's Garlic Run.
If you want a motorcycle event for riders, come to our Southeast Ohio event in October.

+1 At the Full Throttlefest here in KC last year there were several "Bike Trailer" vendors at the event hawking their wares. The one that got the most attention from those in attendence displayed a full clear plexiglass trailer. I guess if ya don't ride to events you can still look cool! LMAO
