A while back we had talked about a shim bank. Well those of you that have shims and would want to part with them, I'll offer to pay shipping plus a fair price if you can provide:

2 (two) of the size 2.825
1 (one) of the size 2.950

John, please move this to whatever section is appropriate. I posted here for pointer purposes.

Starting with the exhaust counting left to right, then intake left to right:

.31 .32 .265 .295
.18 .20 .18 .16

Bolded ones I am reshimming. Lucky me, I can use postion 6's in position 4. That is why three shims are needed.

I have the oil crossover tube brass washers (T3550042) and the o-ring (T3600077) in hand.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Matt.

I tried to call the local stealer and they closed at 8pm. I'll try again tomorrow morning and I'll call the Honda stealer too. I'll PM you and post to this thread, if I can't find any, to see if you or others have any!

This job is a lot easier the second time around. (Third time with the feeler gauges.) The camshaft bearing caps break free WAY easier than the first time. Took an hour and a half to figure out what shims I needed. That is from the first thought of drinking a beer (no not before I lift a wrench) to the point of making inquires and opening the first stout of the evening. Nice when nuts and bolts behave themselves.

Now, where did I set that brew?

We could adjust valves in GA, except that the motor has to be dead cold. Not too many would not want to ride at the rally! IF we do that, we should buy some o-rings and washers. Or use Chy's torch to anneal the old ones. Jets are a dooable thing. Heck I'm holding 45 pilots and 120 mains right now.

Yeah I'm hoping to get a valve check in.... We'll see. I'm gonna order up a gasket and the appropriate rings etc ahead of time just in case.

Well I'll bring my metric feeler gauges. I have a brand new cam cover gasket. I could bring that if'n I don't need it in a couple of days! The cam cover hold down bolt's rubberized washers may need to be replaced so you might order some of those. Adjustment is contingent on obtaining the right size shims. I'll bring the three I have 2.776 and 2.777 (Stock size is 2.775) and one 2.904 (2.900).

Matt,

I was able to buy some shims from the local Yamaha dealer. The shims listed for a V-Max are the same diameter. Thanks for the offer to check the shims you have access too!

Up until now I've never thought of this, but those of us who don't do our own valve adjustments should ask for our old shims back when taking the bike to a dealer to get this done. I know I was charged something like $7.xx for each shim they replaced, and they kept the ones they took out. You have every right to ask for the old shims if you're being charged for new ones.

If we get enough people getting their old shims back, we can send them them off to whoever(Pat?), and it wouldn't take long before we'd have a ample supply of every size shim needed. Then Pat, or whoever, could send out the correct size shims to those who need them.

No part numbers. Simple ask the yamahaha parts gal to pull her box of shims for the V-max. Then select the shims you want. Have a micrometer with you as you will want to ensure shims thicknesses. V-max shims are the same diameter as ours. They state sizes in two decimal points using the metric system. A 2.82mm shim is 282. I went to the Honda stealer and they looked and could not find any equivalent shims. Thanks to the Yamahaha stealer ($12.30 per shim,Ouch, worth every pennie though as I only had to drive 14 miles for the shims vs 70 miles to the dealer who also sells Triumphs!), I had Vera back on the road in less than 24 hours.
