Question for the mechanicaly knowledgeble family members. To abs or not abs that is the question. is the extra bucks asked for on a bike with abs worth it .is it easily servicable etc. Inquiring minds need to know ,tell me all the good the bad and the ugly .

That thread had a link to a very convincing video with/without ABS. The test bikes were on a wet surface.

ABS on a bike makes all the sense in the world.
Only a confirmed Luddite would try to talk you out of it.

I assert once again that the lack of ABS has saved my butt a couple times. I guess you have to be a Luddite to know how to ride. There is no substititute for experience.

Uh huh...it's sorta like how learnin' to perfect doin' a somersault when you're knocked off your bike at speed by some cager comin' outta nowhere and makin' sure you don't hit your head while doin' that so ya don't have to wear a helmet is ALSO the mark of "great rider" TOO, huh Ian?!!! I like ABS on my car and I'd probably like it on a bike but don't bikes generally stop quicker than cars anyway in a simple straight-line test?

Bill, taking into consider the more mass a car must haul down from speed compared to a motorcycle, but also taking into this equation the larger and more (four vs two) contact patches a car has, in most cases and(here comes the operative wording) on a DRY and reasonably non-slippery road surface(i.e. no oil or sand or leaves, etc), the stopping distances will be somewhat the same. Take a look at this video and which I think demonstrates this principle... http://vimeo.com/44130890 (...but once again, take note of how conducive the road surface is to this "test")

It has nothing to do with the number of tires on the car. A skid is calculated with the coefficient of friction. Meaning how sticky is the road. Well polished asphalt is lower or slicker than new etc. Water naturally lubricates the surface.
Generally the mass of a bike is far less than the mass of a car or truck so things stay pretty equal.
The friction or coefficient of friction is determined by a drag sled or other form of measurement. But, we are dealing with once traction is broken. We are not talking stopping distance. We are talking recovery of traction. Once the tire skids it is floating on the road, it cannot be steering in a skid until traction is applied. That is ABS. It gives traction back.
To me its just a no brainer.
