So here's the story. My old CDI went south. It would only fire the right side when I pulled it. Bought a Procom off of EBay, no joy. It would fire the left just fine, but the right would backfire like nobody's biz. To late to return it I bought another Procom from Newbonneville. It worked better, but was still running rough. Backfiring, stalling, what have you.

I gave up on Procom and bought a CDI from a '05 and installed it on my '04. Bike is running better, but I still get some backfire/hesitation from the left cylinder when I thwack the throttle off idle.

Is the advance/retard timing different for the 865 vs the 790? If so, would you suggest reprogramming my Procom CDI to solve these issues? And how would I go about that?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe it's not the CDI.. I'd look at the carbs, plugs and coils.

did you match the setting position (1-9) on the procom with the number on your original CDI?

I did match the setting to my serial number on both units. and I've changed the plugs and cleaned the carbs. I too am thinking that the coils might be on the way out.

Have you check and set the pick up coil gap?

It just sounds like a bad coil to me (based on personal experience).
