TBS needles, Triumph part #T1241024

Why are you thinking about changing your needles? Is there a problem?

You should give the bike's mods or no one can say for sure. I can tell you TBS needles are long and will require shims just to get anything more than stock out of them on some if not all twins. Un-shimmed Thruxtons work almost exactly the same for my 05 speedy as TBS with 3-1/2 shims. (2 regular .5 mm shims and a washer thats about the thickness of 1-1/2 of a .5 shim) the only slight difference I can tell is the thruxtons seem to have a tad more off the line but a bit less than the shimmed TBS in mid range roll-ons. if you're intake is less open than mine i'd go with TBS and a couple shims. The thruxtons were almost too rich for my bike with UNI filter, no snorkel, and bottom drilled. But if yours equally opened up then you can try thruxtons. But if they're too rich you can't back em down like you can with shimed TBS.

The Epcos came with 130 main jets not 160. I installed
the TBS needles with the Epco pipes 130 mains 42 pilots and
a Unifilter in the box with no snorkles. I was then running
rich. I cut out the bottom of the filter and the airbox to let in more air and it runs like a raped ape.
Mixture screws were changed to thumb screws and run 3 turns out. The thumbscrews flow more than the originals did maybe because the tip is slightly different. The plugs look great when I have checked them and my mileage dropped 7-8 on the
highway. So there is my two cents worth.

he's talking about replacing the mix screws with ones that have knurled round ends that stick down below the hole so you can ajust by hand instead of a screwdriver or D tool.

Anyone besides iknowjohnny adding shims to their TBS needles? I thought most were not shimming these needles.

I started with shims when I installed TBS needles, took them out. Mic'd TBS vs stock, found that TBS were thinner at any point same distance from head than stock, even though they are longer. Tempted to drill airbox and filter.

I don't have any shims on mine. I don't know what jets I have though as the dealer rejetted with my Bubs slash cuts. The bike would run lean with the snorkel removed and the TBS needles cured that. I'm a happy guy.

No shims here, seat of the pants says midrange is better over stock needles w/ a shim or two each.

No shims on my TBS needles either. 130 mains, stock 42 pilots, Uni Filter, Airbox mod, Long TOR's, drilled slides.
Runs very strong all the way up.

The thumbscews are mixture screws with a large serrated head
so you can reach in adjust them by hand without needing a screwdriver.
As for the jets, like I said my airbox is
about as open as you can make it and the
TBS needles and 130 jets flow enough fuel.
My plugs run a nice clean tan and I don't
have any flat spots through the RPM range
and I run a 17 tooth front sprocket to help
wind it up.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my shim question.I just drilled my air box, installed TBS needles, tried 130 mains then went to 135 mains.Mid range is great,1/4 throttle is good but I had to open the screws 4 turns to get it just good so may try bigger pilot.kind of junks out at WOT, not sure if it is rich or lean but I have a set of 140's so I guess I'll go that direction first.Should have it dialed in by the time the weather finally breaks here.I appreciate all the tech. info I get from everyone here.
thanks,
mike

Put the 140's in today. It's better but I think still lean.I have not seen anyone here with main jets bigger than 135 unless they had the freak.unless I'm misreading this thing I've got one fuel hungry TA. I guess I'll have to order another mint from Brent! No matter what I will be ready for the CT ride on the 29th.
