It was the mechs. responsibility to survey wear and tear (general condition) of all the parts he handled and advise you that this or that part was worn beyond spec. and should be replaced. Perhaps he didn't even properly re-tension the chain? I shouldn't talk smack about a guy I don't know, and I wasn't there. But a lot of people install these kits, even with more mileage than you, without grief.
