Wife finally gave the thumbs up to me getting my first motorcycle. I know I want an America, so visited a local dealer to check one out. Met a very nice salesman, had he no problem spending some time with me answering questions and giving good advise.
The question of price came up, and he told me that they get about another $1,000 on top of MSRP for "setup" and fees. I've been in the car business for over 25 years, so this sounded a little odd to me.
Is this standard practice for a Triumph dealer? Or is he just looking for a reaction (and hoping for the best) and the negotiations start from there?

I didn't pay that when I bought mine. Check other dealers online and see what they charge.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Thanks. I am considering a used America as well. They do seem to pop up on ebay.
I would like to do business with the same place I plan on having service done. Any and all reviews on the dealer have been stellar. But, like most people (all?), I don't want to pay more than I have too.

I bought mine in 05. I called every dealer in Tx. Had them fax or e-mail their best offer. Got the lowest guy, then talked with him. He took off dealer + about another 500. I did drive 3.5 hrs to get the bike, but it was worth it. He even gave me dealer price on a few things out of the sales floor (New helmet shirts and stuff). So call around or look on Cycle Trader. You can find pretty clean TBA or TBS that already has some basic mods and bling for around 3 to 5.

Might help if we knew your general local. In Kansas City, you pay MSRP + $50 process fee.

Really is a good forum/site, and seems to be populated by good people. I've read through much of it. It says a lot when you see people like yourself who have stuck around for many years.
I'm in the St. Louis area. 2nd child about to graduate college, so it is time for me. Been thinking about a motorcycle for a few years, then without prompting, the wife tells me I should get one. So off to the dealer I went. However, I'm waiting until after graduation. (June-July). First timer.

Sweet, I can help you find one in St. Louis if you're interested, hell, I'll even come over and test ride it for you to make sure it can do the ton!!  What dealer told you 1000 dollars, Donelson?  Go to Moto Europa, or go check craigslist

roadworthy: Speedmaster? I have no way of knowing (just what I've read), but I believe I'd be better off/more comfortable with the America handlebars.
If I do go used, I'll probably go 2009 or newer, as I'd want EFI. I've dealt with carbs on cars ('66 Mustang, '75 Beetle, '71 Fiat, ...), and don't think I'd want to deal with the maintenance.

At least you have a bit of time to look around for what you want. My dad has an '11 America and the EFI is nice if you don't want to tinker, I guess. When I was looking to buy mine, I ended up going about 240 miles away to get it, and spent the rest of my day riding home with a big ass grin

You will do well with Dave helping you find the right bike and the right deal. Take advantage of having a smarticle like him close to you. And don't pay a grand on top. Have them give you a grand in equipment (helmet, jacket etc). Which Dave will convince you is best spent on shiny bits  or going with a gently used one is safe too. I'm at 15k trouble free miles. Cardinal red was the first and fastest although mulberry is a close runner up! You are fortunate to have Dave nearby. He'll steer you right, you can count on that. Otherwise, welcome aboard and let us know what you end up with!

Welcome to the site, Tom. Listen to Dave. (Unless he talks about me). An experienced hand is worth a lot, and I can tell ya, Dave has the most experienced hand around!  Seriously though, he knows as much as anybody around here and is a serious rider. My two cents. If you can find a slightly used one, the savings can be large. And don't be afraid of the carbs on an older bike. They are pretty good. Most of us have never had any trouble with a carbed bike. Keep us posted about your shopping luck. We love to see another friend on a like bike. Especially if it's one of the really rare and collectable RED ones!

Welcome Tom. Don't give up on carbs. Once you dial them in for your pipes, you'll rarely have to touch them again. Now get some Mikuni HSR 42mm Carburetors and maintenance will be forthcoming. KISS. Fuel injection: WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO THE TANKS! grrrr One thing about the master of St Louis: Bring coffee! (Love you Dave!)

Welcome to the site. As others have noted don't be afraid of the carbs, set them and forget them, plus if you go carbs you can also get the option of the clam shell tank which i honestly think is much nicer and more "akin" to the triumph look then the new ones JMO.
And Uhm.... everyone knows the black ones are the fast ones!

I run one hsr42 and only have to maintenance it every now and then. Not bad for a tinkerers toy. I prefer the carb bikes as mentioned before the tanks are better looking. But there are lots of plusses; worse fuel mileage, those little stock carbs restrict the bike so much that it only presents half of the full potential, in other words lots of room for mad scientist fun, those cooky airboxes are a bodgers dream, oh the hacking, cutting, and modifying the leave room for. I love these bikes you buy them then completely change them. Its like being addicted to paint fumes, greasy hands, gasoline, and grinder shavings.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.
