Since I normally wear a half helmet (HJC) when riding & at that mostly round town (albeit I have done some longer miles [500+] in the 1/2 helmet). In the past (many moons ago) I have worn an open face - 3/4 lid also but didn't like it much. With my epic ride coming up relatively soon, I have been wondering about full face helmets a bit & whether I should invest in one for my journey. Mind you I really like my HJC & road/wind noise isn't an issue for me. So my considerations are mostly concern: a) warm weather riding comfort b) visibilty (I wear RX riding eyewear) especially peripherally speaking that is... & visibility riding in the rain & such (not an issue other than a bit of a midly stinging face wash in my HJC as the roadster screen on my BA catches most of the rain) c) personal safety So does anyone have comments or recommendations on full face lids that I might consider? I know alot depends on personal preference & will head out to my local stealership in the next week to check some full face lids out on my own. But having some info before hand to weigh my selection upon would be appreciated.

Ill start the can of worms you just opened  Safety is a given and we can all imagine but no one really gonna change your mind on this so it is what it is. I went with a flip up after having a try full face and dont think Ill ever go back. Flip ups are noisier than traditional full face but not by much. My Arai was louder than my Shoei for sure. With the fliped up part up I get some buffeting and it catches the wind. There are some that are designed to flip further back (Shark I think). I went with Shoei Multitech because it felt right but have recently tried on a Nolan N104 and wow... visibility is amazing. I need to put one on for a while and see how it feels. I may switch. The convenience of a flip up is minimal but still nice. For a fast gas up and a quick drink or water or to pull over and have a quick conversation without having to remove the lid is nice. The flip up tend to have some extra room at the ear for headsets/glasses. I wear sunglasses when I ride due to light sensitivity. No issues for me. I like to research products before buying and the best resource out there is webbikeworld.com. Seem like they have reviewed just about everything out there. If you do get a full face or flip up I think they all come with the Pinlock option now but look for it. Works like a champ. Your glasses will still fog but not your visor.

My worm's worth. I suppose a full helmet is the safest. But, like you, I wear a half lid. I've tried a full helmet a few times, hated it. Might as well ride in a car. If a full face helmet ruins the enjoyment of the ride, what's the point? Sure, my half lid isn't as comfortable in a rainstorm, snowstorm, meteor storm, but for the short amount of time this happens, I just "man up" and chalk it down to another riding experience. (But as a safety aside, you're heard the old expression, "safety in numbers". Therefore, I would suggest you take a friend like me along to "scout out" the dangerous bits. Pay for my gas, food and lodging, and I'M YOU'RE MAN!) (Really Karl, it's the safe thing to do!)

I agree with everything Z just told ya, Karl. And if as Rich just noted here, you've mostly worn a half-helmet in the past, then going to a full-face model will seem strange to ya. And thus, this is why I feel your best bet for that long-distance ride you have coming up out this way, and one which during that long ride which I know from past experience occasionally having the option of covering your face with a shield is far less tiring on a rider than any open face in either 1/2 or 3/4 style will provide you(especially on those Interstates), is precisely why I endorse Z's thoughts about a flip-up or "modular" helmet. And, while I have yet to try this one out, the Shark helmet that Z mentioned and which allows the option of an open-faced or as a full-face, and which the chin-bar folds completely back and out-of-the-way and thus would still be aerodynamic when you're using it as an open-face is this one... http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shark-evoline-2-st-helmet And, at the price they're selling this model at this website, it sounds like a great bargain to me.

Karl - I use a modular, for the reasons Z mentioned. When I got mine most warned they weren't for riding when flipped up, though that appears not to be the case with the Shark Dwight linked. But something to think about. ptions in KC other than dealerships I bought my & my daughter's helments @ Motorcycle Closeouts up north, & my wife's @ PowerSports4Less in Spring Hill - they seemed to have moved their store to Big Twin Cycles in Edwardsville, KS. Not sure about Big Twin, the guys in Spring Hill were great but they didn't stock much in the store. More dirt/sport bike oriented but with some full/modular options is Cycle Gear in Lenexa, on the frontage road off I-35 between 87th & 95th. I'd be interested in hearing what you choose, I'll be looking to replace mine this year. Leaning towards the Nolan N43E .

I started riding with a 3/4 helmet with full visor and liked it quite a bit. Then I bought a half helmet ,wore it 3 times and never wore it again [no screen on bike]. The noise was horrible,protection from debris was zero and I think half lids are useless in most wrecks. I got a hjc modular and never looked back. My next lid will either be a Shoei NeoTek modular,lazer pure carbon Monaco modular or the new shoei GT air full face solid. When I see the facial damage that occurs in many wrecks I cant imagine having anything less then a full face helmet.

When I first got a full face helmet, I swapped back and forth between it and my half helmet. Now I'm to the point where I haven't worn the half helmet for a couple years now. I really like my full face.
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

I'm in the modular or flip-up camp. I like the safety of a full face but have a problem getting them on & off. The modular gives close to same safety with the convenience of getting the chin bar out of the way when it's going on & coming off. Less visibility than a half or 3/4 but that's really just minor. I always seem to forget to zip up my jacket before putting the helmet on & have to flip the chin bar back up to get the zipper started  I currently use an HJC IS-MAX with the slide down tinted visor. Not real quiet but much better than the previous AGV. This one has good air flow but I do remove the face shield in the summer, it gets hot here when it's not cold.

I too am in the flip-up camp, especially in winter and/or long distance. 3/4 for non-winter short trips.
With the flip-flop I can raise the front so people can see my face when calling in a shop or for fuel, so if I'm still told to remove my helmet, I don't feel unreasonable by taking my custom elsewhere
I do think a built in sun shield is essential though

Me? HJC flip up. I tried a Nolan. Hated the Nolan for sure. A Round helmet that allowed too much wind noise, even with ear plugs in. So not only to you have style considerations, but you have manufacturer considerations. Riding cross country you want to be comfortable in/with your gear. Better get that new lid soon! (so you can get used to it).

Ok, as a person who took some time before ever committing to helmet wear at all I have too say that comfort was paramount for me. I got a half helmet that ended up living in the median between the north bound and south bound lanes of the interstate highway. It was like tieing a parachute to my neck. If ya wanted to choke yourself as some kind of fetish I recommend one. Plus you can get the look of a circumsized .........no need to go farther there.
After that I got the z1r 3/4 jimmy retro a very cool looking helmet for back highway riding, but at 85mph you are back to choking in the fetish dungeon again. I wear this helmet when I know its just a slow speed back country cruise down some twisty roads.
now on to my favorite helmet, the icon airframe full face. Its comfortable and allows plenty of cool air in with out trying to pull your head off. Its very arrow dynamic and does not buffet in the wind even at speeds like 120mph.
I have never worn a modular and probably never will because they are heavier and I dont like having a cmu block stapped to my head.
I disagree with the "may as well be in a car if ya wear a full face" it has not removed any pleasure or feeling of freedom from my riding experience at all.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

 Rich, you crack me up man! Now I got nothin against sharing the road with ya & do appreciate your offer....but....my buget for this adventure is limited to solo expenses only.
That said, like you I've mostly ridden wearing the half shell cause I like it & have done the man-up ride through whatever mother nature had to throw in my route....& am likely to do the same in the future......dangerous bits?  Heck these days just being on 2 wheels is dangerous enuf w/ all the cell phone talking, cheesburger eating, make-up touching up, & etc. et al mindless cagers on the roads today. I thought that was part of the adventure????

 ....Bro's et al, You all have provided me much to go on regarding (thanks to all) into full face lids. It looks to me that the consensus is to go with a modular/flip-up design....which assures me that my first inkling on that type would probably be more to my liking/comfort & etc. So......now I'm off to the web to research & see what I come up with locally too. I'll probably end up strapping the my HJC half lid on the scoot for the trip too. My ol man may wanna go for a roll round the block for his 80th Birthday!

I went from a flip up modular to a Nolan N43 with removable chin bar and never looked back. Best of both worlds and fantastic vision port, full face when you need it and best 3/4 on the planet when a full face won't do. Light weight, too.

Well , I really am liking my Bell 500 and my Davida leather mask, a bandana also works.....it is more comfortable IMO than either of my full face which are ... which are black and white (can't) remimber the makes....

Guys I like the look of the Nolan N43. Correct me here if I'm missing something here. You would have the same limitations with this helmet as full coverage, talking with a fellow rider, smokin a peace pipe, eating a hoagie, etc.  Plus I'm wondering about the chin bar and other accessories with this helmet. Whe're you keeping these items when you make a change on the road?

The chin bar fits neatly in a saddlebag and the shield flips completely out of the way just like a modular. The shield is longer than a regular full face and is really the biz when you're in 3/4 mode...
I guess I should ride up to K town and show you :-)

I only wear a helmet when in a state that requires it by law and then I wear a half helmet. I carry a leather face mask that covers my neck for rain and such.Similar to this.

I've been wearing the HJC flip ups for almost nine years. I'm thinking of going to the new one with the integral sun shade. They fit my big melon better than other brands. Forty years ago I started wearing the Bell Star but disliked having to remove my glasses to put it on and take it off.
The modular design makes it easy to scratch your nose when you want while also keeping the bugs out of your teeth. Mine is fairly quiet, but then again, my bike has TORs rather than really loud pipes. Wind noise is minimal behind the Memphis Fat and noticeable without a windshield but not distracting.
A few years ago I learned an interesting lesson riding from Prescott AZ to Los Angeles. When it's 115 fahrenheit it's better to have your face completely enclosed. At that temperature having your face exposed to the wind is like putting your face in a convection oven.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Besides that OTHER lesson you learned on that trip, eh Larry?! (...you know...that it ain't much fun standin' on that corner in Winslow Arizona next to a motorcycle and after its aluminum rear chain sprocket disintegrates!)

That's true. Lucky for me Fast Eddie got the needed parts to me and I was on my way within 24 hours of calling him. And a note to all, there ain't NOTHING in Winslow, AZ if your bike breaks down there.

If it doesn't fit right, you won't wear it much.
Try some on. One is going to feel better than anything else did as soon as you get it on.
That's the one.
I love my Shoei RF1100. I might have loved my RF1000 better, but because of the fit of these fine helmets, when it's time to replace it, I won't even consider anything else. I just don't leave home without it.

Keith, I know you are right when you say try them first. man I've been looking but helmets stores in my area are a joke. Most bike dealers have limited or older models. Cycle Gear has the $600 Shoei and the $69 Bilts, that's about it.
Looking in the 200-300 range. I love my HJC Symax but I'm hesitant to order any helmet online. Although I did buy the HJC years ago online. The Nolan n104 looks appealing, again I've not tried it.

Well, not to further sidetrack this thread anymore than it already has gone, BUT I gotta say Chad, I find your poo-pooing of Mr. Browne's music a little strange.
