My dad's garage today. And there, on a shelf, a dusty old bottle. I look closer. It's a Jameson bottle. I pick it up... "Hey, Dad, you know you have an dusty old bottle of Jameson here?" "Yes, I do. It was from your grandfather's tobacco store. Someone gave it to him to settle a tab. It's yours if you want it" Now, let it be known that I ADORE Jameson whiskey.. But this, my friends, is no whiskey.. it is Ambrosia from Olympus! The dating of the batch is from around 1940.

Wow! Very cool find alright, Mike! For the last week or so I've been out of my preferred Single Malt Scotch whisky, and so I've started on the bottle of Tyrconnell Single Malt Irish that Becky brought to last year's Southwest Triumph Fest. And I'll tell ya what! I'm likin' the hell outta this stuff! It's so smooooooth! (...btw, Happy St.Paddy's Day tomorrow!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

WOW! that is some really good stuff. I think it would be hard for me to open a bottle that's been closed that long and with that kind of story behind it. But I sure would love to indulge and savor it.

Wow, what a find! 70+ ish yr old Irish whisky....my friend you have the distinct pleasure of breaking the seal on that bottle o' Jameson only on the rarest and most celebratory events of your life for the rest of your days from here on out (that is until its gone...). I would cherish, and savor every drop in memory of your Grand Dad, if I was you. Dwight...you'll be sure to note that I didn't use the superfluouse "e" in "whisky" Mostly out of respect for this vintage draft.

I wouldn't open it until you find out how much it is worth. You could be holding a new bike in your hands.

899 British pounds is $1,357.05. Dang, that bottle of Jamesons is getting more valuable every day.

Although Jameson is not my first choice of Irish whiskey, that is a very cool discovery!

...and there I was, faced with a decision. Throughout life, money will always come and go.. However, how many times will I be able to open a 70+ year old bottle of whiskey, from my grandfather? Finally, St. Paddy's Day. I made a decision, and call my good friend and neighbor. I said: Are you free, do you have 15 minutes for me to run over? He said: Sure, come by.. He opened the door, and found me on his porch, grinning - holding the bottle... He said: Oh, DO COME IN!
We stared at it for a while. His dog stared at us... After all, when a Jew and an Italian ponder opening a 70 year old bottle of Irish Whiskey, on St. Paddy's Day... can't take that lightly. I removed the lead wrapper, by pulling the old dusty cloth ribbon. Corked! Damn thing was corked! I ever so slowly withdraw the cork... Two glasses... No Ice... We raised.. I toasted Granddad.. and I sipped.. not swallowing.. letting it sit for a moment. There was no 'burn' it was just warming, and FULL of flavors.. peach, and almost floral. Simply Heavenly... I tell you friends, if I had waited for some auspicious occasion.. I never would have opened it. If I had cashed it in.. the money would be gone to bills. This was an experience. Each time I pour a glass, I go back in time...

Loved your short but wonderful write-up here, Mike! Yep, there's no doubt in MY mind here now. Graciously sharing this gift with your friend was the right choice, as this memory you created will be worth FAR more in the coming years than whatever remuneration you would have received by selling it. Cheers!

A wee nip of that ancient golden elixer on St. Paddys day with a friend, thats poetry. Did you put it back on the shelf to gather dust for next year?
