Okay, the are several people selling air box removal kits for my 2004 Speedmaster and the have an option of exposed and non-exposed. I understand the difference but I can't find any pictures to compare each to. If anybody knows of some pictures, direct me to them.
Another question I have is, if I get the non exposed kit, can I turn it into the exposed version? Or are they so different that it can't be converted?

Go with the "Ghetto Freak" You just drill out the bottom of the air box. That's free and takes 30 minutes with two beer breaks included. It is also easily reversible. Look in the tech vault for the destructions. Ihad both a freak kit as well as a drilled air box and there is minimal if any difference in performance. You can always buy one of the pricey kits later if you don't like the results.

I did that one. Then switched to battery relocation. The kit did not fit great. The holes didn't line up like I had hoped. You can tweak it. I can send you pics of mine if you want. Just on me your email if you want. I'd save theoney as long as you like the open look.

Yes Tom's relocation is sweet. It's in the vendors section. I did mine myself too. I think it is totally worth saving 300 and doing it that way. And I think it looks wicked.

That looks interesting. I had not seen that before. Don't guess that it comes with the filters, does it?

Doesn't come with the filters. Some members use Uni and some K&N. I just liked the look of the latter better. I'm sure there are some people that have some filters they would like to sell at a discount to you too.

I thought he was talking about Tom's battery relocation set up, Z. Which last I knew he was not including filters. But Scott and Tom can clarify the question and answer respectively.

Yes, in the "Tech Vault", as stated above.

I just switched over to uni foam filters due to clearance issues with my new billet intakes (the unis are flexible). I've got a set of used K&Ns that I just cleaned and oiled. I'll let you have em for $55 shipped and even through in the heavy duty clamps (the clamps they come with are too thin and can cause the filters to pop off the carbs). Send me a PM if you want em, otherwise they're bound for the classifieds.

I think that I am going to drill the airbox first. I have ordered a jetting kit and am still waiting for it. If I like it, I will probably go with the battery relocation bracket and put to K&N filters on it.

Okay, if I remove the airbox, what do I do with wires and other things that are bolted to the airbox?

Well, when I went to pod filters I cut away most of the airbox, but left enough on top and on the right side to keep all the electrical stuff in place, plus it saved the mount points for the side cover. Really can't see it unless you're looking for it.

I like the look of the totally exposed. Like with the battery relocation bracket that is sold here in the classifieds. I'm wondering where the wires went?

Search for brokenfixed. That's Tom that sells them. Basically he bundles them all above the battery below the seat. He has pics on here. That should give you an idea of where all that spaghetti goes. Ill look for it too.

I cut the bottom out of my airbox, and drilled holes in the bottom of the air filter. After having it wash-out in the rain a few times, I figured it isn't worth any "gains" I thought I might have realized. So, I bought a new UniFilter. Easy conversion back. She get's plenty of air, and fuel, too, with the Pingle. And hasn't washed out since...

Without the airbox bottom you probably do pull water up from the back tire. But with the battery there it works as a fender/guard from water. I ride in the rain a lot and have never pulled in water with my pods and open mid section. I probably should have filter covers.

Pingle stopcock-where you change to fuel On/off/reserve. Is a high flow one so in theory more fuel moves from tank to carbs. You can find them on newspeedmaster.com, tpusa etc. varying opinions on the need for them.

So, if I just change the filter to a Uni-Filter and don't drill out the bottom of the airbox, will I still need to re-jet? Will it make enough difference in the air flow? What about removing the snorkel or adding one of those bell mouths? Has anybody tried that?

DNA filters are the best rated filters for air flow(per flow bench tests), hard to find and not cheap, but Uni and K&N outperform the OEM filter as well. Yes, Any time you change the air/fuel/exhaust equation, a rejet is in order. Otherwise, why bother.

Have you found the jet calculator in the vault yet? Fun to play with to determine what air intake/output changes make in jets.

Great. A lot have the bellmouth on their bikes and seem to like it. You will have to rejet for basically any change in the filter and exhaust. That's my favorite part is setting up carbs with filters etc. I woul always want a carbed bike to play with. You are carbed right? Without going back and looking at your year.

Yes, it has carbs. It is a 2004. One of the main reasons I was thinking about removing the air box and rejetting was to get some more power. I went from a 16 tooth front sprocket to a 17 and thought I would need more power. I got that changed yesterday and now I'm not sure I do. Seem to have plenty of power, just hits the rev limiter about 5 mph later in first gear. Of course it looks cool with the pods! That's a good reason to do it, isn't it?
