If you live in the Mid-Atlantic region, you may have noticed that today was a nice day. A bunch of people with motorcycles did too. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, riding season is here, or will be soon.

Every year, about April or May, right around the corner, I read in the Times-Dispatch (my local newspaper) about a number of of dudes (no, I've never read this about a female that I recall) that die out on a motorcycle ride.

If you are in a car, and think "I did not see him" will work, I encourage you to slow down mentally, take your time, look for motorcycles, know what you see, and simply keep your distance. On the outside, it will cost you 30 seconds if all goes well. Any attorney will tell you that "I did not see him" is an ineffective defense for manslaughter.

If you are one of the few that actually rides a motorcycle, as I expect everyone on this Internet forum to be, make sure that thing is in good shape, and you remember how to ride it, how it feels and responds. Stay away from cars, and don't be a jackass: Jackasses die. Do not drink and ride that motorcycle, because drunk riders die more often than jackasses.

If you see someone who you think may be slightly inebriated, discourage them from driving a car or motorcycle year round. Like many old SOBs, I try to read the paper every day. I will wager anything, from late March to late May, I will see at least half a dozen people die in central VA due to simply preventable motorcycle accidents. No need. Don't do it.

I've too noticed a high incident of m/c accidents at the beginning of riding season. I admit to feeling somewhat "out of practice" every Spring and caution myself to take it easy until I get my wings again. Of course, I'm an old fart and have nothing to prove but I've seen a lot of youngins out there "strutting their stuff" when the season begins.

Good little post here, Marcellus and much appreciated!

Yea, if ya gotta kill some one make it ya self. Dont subject others to your recklessness.

I live in Fla. and the cagers are wicked here. I wish someone would invent a Laser. That when pointed at a cell phone, I-pad ETC. would heat in up. They would throw it down and concentrate on driving.
I have seen then texting and talking at 5:30 in the morning on busy roads around Central Florida.

I was so much older then, I am younger than that now (Wrote By Dylan Sung by the BYRDS,)

Since the whole "cellphone revolution" hit, I've always thought Weird Al Yankovic has missed a golden opportunity to create an "Anthem" for those of us who've come to disdain the practice of people using their cellphones while driving.

Yep, I'll NEVER understand why Weird Al never took Billy Ocean's old '80s hit of "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car", fracture the original lyrics as he's famous for doing, and come out with somethin' like..."Get Off That FREAKIN' Phone, Start Drivin' That FREAKIN' Car!"!!!

(...though of course, if he would have included the word "freakin'" in the lyrics, there'd have to be an extra two beats in music between the words "That" and the words "Phone" and "Car", huh!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
