the other day my wife and I stopped by a car lot to check one out... the salesman was on me almost immediately and he went to shake my hand as he introduced himself and didn't even take his glove off! Could you have stumbled upon a Rolls Royce or Jag (Ford) dealership by mistake?

Ya know, the Wal Mart set is every class these days. We service Corvettes, Hummers,Vipers, etc... right along side the Smart cars, 97 Cavaliers, etc...
Not really. So many are seriously over-leveraged today, cause someone got them into it for $399 a month.

I hate the "Handshake" tradition. I have to shake hands several times a day, every day. Sometimes the hand I'm shaking is very clammy, moist, sweaty. After shaking their hand upon meeting, I come to the conclusion that they were not feeling their best that day. I'm ALL for the "Hey-Dude!"

I like the handshake, a firm handshake and eye to eye contact generally shows character.

Aah, but NOT according to the "Golden Rules of Comedy: Article VI, Subsection-B, which states:
Whenever claiming a well known and often heard old expression as your own, ALWAYS replace at least one of the nouns with more descriptive versions, as this may give the impression to at least a few members of your audience that for once you might have actually thought of an original idea all on your own."
And I ALWAYS go by what those rules say!
Was that in the Uncle Miltie subsection?

Canadians are not polite generally(in my experience of global travelers). In fact I would go as far as to say they are one of the least polite to deal with.

Yep Bill! I think it WAS!
(...or as they used to say: "If you take a joke away from Milton Berle, it's not stealing..it's repossessing!")
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

REALLY Bill?! Well in MY experience I've always found 'em to be a little more polite than us Yanks in general.
(...HOWEVER, it's their tight-fisted TIPPING practices that seems to be the talk of the service industry folks around here in Arizona, 'cause I've heard MORE than ONE waitress mention THAT over time)

Most of the old money folks I've encountered - I'm talking 3-4 generations back, don't have an attitude. I've actually seen them slam their kids if they don't toe the line. They're usually as frugal as I am. Its the newly rich that go out of their way to try and impress. Something that doesn't play well with me.
I had a job once that required me to go into multi-million homes and it amazed me how many weren't even furnished - but they had the requisite Beemers in the garage to impress the neighbors. One woman told me three years in a row that her furniture was being custom made and that's why they had lawn chairs inside and sheets on the windows. I guess in addition to the lack of money, she had a memory problem too.
I'll take my simple life any day!

I did a lot of high end home repair too and I have to agree that people from old money were always nice. Bring drinks and snacks and asking if we wanted to take a dip in the pool or use the sauna. Very down to earth and not wasteful. My family had money when I was growing up and I had to work for and earn everything, nothing was handed to me, ever. My dad and uncle were doctors with private practices and my other uncle a stock broker. My grand father own his own engineering and design company that got many big contracts like designing and building machinery that went into Bethlehem Steel among others.

I saw a service van in traffic that had the following statement lettered on the side of the van - "We do it right the first time". Well, I just couldn't resist, so's I yelled out "what kinda crap is that? you're SUPPOSED to do it RIGHT the FIRST TIME !!!!" Like they had some brilliant genius marketing goin' on there. I think I had WAAYYY too much Starbucks that mornin'. We live in an age where the acceptable has become the exceptional. They just don't give a crap.

Yeah, well, I have to admit when I was in Montana last year, I didn't run across many rude people at all. BUT, I DO hear there's two OTHER things that Montana has in abundance up there, John. (...yeah, yeah...I know YOU know I'm drivin' towards that classic punchline here of: "And I don't see any horns on YOU!")

"Two other things in abundance?" Firewood, pickup trucks, washingtonian's, hours of winter darkness, superfluous U's? Oh, please & thank you. jh

Why is the phrasing "give a crap" and "take a leak"? It never made much sense jh
