Man i hate to say it, maybe i am getting a bit older and more jaded then before, but what the heck has happend to things like "thank you" "excuse me" "pardon me", a firm handshake on greeings, looking a person in the face when addressing them, i mean really, I can only speak for us Canadian, but we do have a bit of a stigma attached to us for being "polite" people for the most part, i fear the more people come to stay and live amoungst us from abroad the worse our manners get........

the other day my wife and I stopped by a car lot to check one out... the salesman was on me almost immediately and he went to shake my hand as he introduced himself and didn't even take his glove off!  Angela says I'm old fashioned, but seriously, I always take a glove off to shake hands with someone

I agree, everyone is out for number one these days and everyone wants to sue everyone else. makes me want to grab the little bastages by the throat and pound some sense into them. If I could get away with it I would. No one takes responsibility for their own actions any more. They are always looking to blame someone else for their own stupidity. No patience anymore either. I blame the parents.

There are no consequences for rude behavior.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Well, I could say a lot about Southern manners and all, but basic ettiquett transcends that. It's a thing that with some is innate,with others must be taught. It's the spirit of humility that is the root of manners and respect. It's never out of style to : .offer a seat to another .let them ahead in a line .take off your hat !!! .say SIR or MA'AM .walk a lady out to the car .defrost her car and warm it up .do some laundry .this could just go on for ever. .just dispense with all the social strata and be a servant and put others above yourself. I gotta go now, Leithal sent me some new bubble wrap and I feel the need .

OK, I'll take a stab at this. But I'm only gonna pick one category among many, time restraints and all that. TELEVISION. Or maybe more specifically, "creative" programing talents. TV shows, most of them, in the early days were positive reinforcers of values. Then, shows like "Roseanne" came around, which basically celebrated the dysfunctional family. Add in shows like "South Park" where every kind of value is made fun of. Stir in lots of sex, cause that's what sells. Don't get me wrong. I laughed at a lot of those shows, recognizing parody and outrageousness for fun. But constant exposure to most, and especially young people, and the tiny little circuts in people's brains started connecting. Hey, guess what? Nothing is sacred, respect is something to scoff at and rudeness rules AND is funny!

Ya see, I TOO grew up watchin' Robert Young and Hugh Beaumont dispensing sage and mannered parental advice to their TV children back in the '50s and '60s, and WAY before people like Roseanne came on the scene.

Well, it's when I come to a business's door and somebody gets there RIGHT ahead o' me, REGARDLESS if it's a man OR a woman, and they don't look behind 'em to see if anybody MIGHT be comin' up to said door immediately behind 'em and thus fail to hold it open for me! It's like they're in their own little freakin' world or somethin'!!! Ya see, I ALWAYS hold those freakin' doors for EVERYBODY, regardless, once again, if it's a man OR a woman, AND for the LIFE O' ME, I'll NEVER understand why EVERYBODY, and once AGAIN, regardless IF it's a MAN OR a WOMAN doesn't do the SAME FREAKIN' THING!!! Well Kevin Quebec is a beast in it's own, the only province thats part of a country that would rather be it's own country, more then a few folks in Canada would be happy to set them adrift, but then what would we do for poutine! Love that bad awful stuff! I guess what started this is being out at costco the other night, people budding in, walking in front of you , one guy almost ran the wife over with his cart he was in such a hurry, it was all i could do not to slap that sucker into remembering his manners. Then of course there are those Canadians who don't speak Canadian. I mean i am all about sharing the space but remember where you are and the manerism that is (or rather maybe) "should" be expected.

Just this past Saturday/Sunday not less than four ladies thanked me for either holding the door for them, waiting for them to pass before I continued my head long rush through the store, etcetera. Holding doors is the least one should do for the next human. Humility is a word/action lost to modern broadcasting.

Seriously, my 6 yr old has more manners than most adults I know. He always says, Thank you, you're welcome, Yes Sir, No Ma'am, ect... Just the other day while my wife wasn't feeling good, he took great care of her while she rested on the couch, although he forced her to watch his cartoons.
But in the words of another famous and VERY polite American..........

My grand kids also are polite, they say please and thank you. Bless you when you sneeze etc... They don't do the sir or ma'am thing but are respectful.(except my grand daughter who is a handful at times but she is generally polite) I use sir and ma'am and hold doors for people etc... but I find most people are self-absorbed and disrespectful especially at work. Just yesterday I had an issue with a flat tire in the oil bay that put the next oil change back by about 15 minutes. She was swearing and call us ignorant (we were polite and apologetic) Left 2 carts of groceries and made us cancel her oil change and pull it out of the bay when it was already in the process of being done. Had she waited a few more minutes it would have been done. She is not an unusual case either, most are nasty. By contrast I was talking with a customer also there for an oil change who couldn't believe how unreasonable she was being. He left happy and was understanding that we had an unforseeable situation.

Why do think I retired at 55 y/o (and with a reduced pension) as soon as I could from the airlines, Ian?! Yep, because of what you've just described about how many customers act today when they arrive at the airport to take their flights.
(...yep..rude, clueless and demanding seems to be order of the day, now that air travel is affordable to the "Walmart Set"!)

Ya know, the Wal Mart set is every class these days. We service Corvettes, Hummers,Vipers, etc... right along side the Smart cars, 97 Cavaliers, etc... The ones with money are generally the bigger A holes.

Yep, actually that's true a lot of the time, alright.
This might have something to do with that type never having a customer service type of job, and thus having no "empathy" with or for the person behind the counter.
