Dear fellow veteran,

A new military award – the Distinguished Warfare Medal - is being proposed to recognize those skilled military patriots who perform their duties to an exceptional degree in flying unmanned drone aircraft against our enemies. However, this proposed award would be placed ABOVE the Bronze Star Medal (BSM) in precedence. The BSM with "V" device recognizes exceptional valor against an armed enemy on the field of battle, and a White House petition has been started to ask that the precedence for the new medal be placed lower than the BSM in reverence and resect for those war fighters who have earned and received a Bronze Star for their bravery in combat or for exceptional duty performed in a combat area. I am writing to ask if you would please consider joining us by signing the White House petition at the link below. We will need 100,000 signatures by March 16, 2013 in order to receive a response from the appropriate office within the administration. Please also note that this is NOT in protest of establishing an award to recognize drone pilots and their unique missions, but only against the precedence of the award.

Thank you for your consideration and for your service in defense of our country, and please feel free to pass this message on to other veterans, active duty personnel, and any interested party.

Sincerely,

John C. Bullen, 1SG (Retired)

The US military has entirely too many medals and awards. Every general or admiral has ribbons up to his shoulder and everyone with 10 years or more has four or five rows of ribbons. Mainly for little or nothing.

Some good comments here: http://cdrsalamander.blogspot.com/

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

When I was in the Army, medals were given for distinguished fellatio, shiny boots, or any other sort of ass sucking. I got 2 army achievement medals and a good conduct medal in 5 years. One AAM was one of those re-enlistment signing bonus medals, and the good conduct medal they throw at you every three years if you don't get a DUI on post or fail a pee test...

Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

My father serviced in Patton's 4th Armored Division in No.Africa, Sicily, the boot of Italy, and then in France and ultimately in Germany during the first months of Occupation there and before returning home in late 1945.

I remember as a kid of about 9 or 10 one day opening his dresser drawer in my parent's bedroom while he was getting dressed to mow the lawn or somethin', and discovering in said dresser drawer a little open box which contained some of his medals he had won during his service, INCLUDING the Purple Heart, and then asking him about 'em.

If memories serves me here, his response was somethin' like: "Yeah, they gave those things out to everybody. They're no big deal."

And then he walked over to the drawer and picked up his "Ruptured Duck" pin(the one they gave out during and right after WWII to all the Honorably Discharged Servicemen and women), and THEN if I recall correctly again he said, "But THIS is the one I'm MOST proud of receiving, because it says I somehow made it through that damn war in reasonably good shape!"

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

And gettin' back on topic here John, I agree with ya, and think Steve said it best with...

And so I'm about to add my name to this petition also.

(...nope, this "ranking" doesn't seem to make any sense at all, does it!)

I agree, therefore I signed. Shared it on Facebook too.
During my 9 years in the Navy I received 6, and 2 duplicates.
I didn't do anything special, just my job and kept my nose clean.
