Hey Skillet, couple of things wrong with your post. First off, you don't know what you're talking about. Didn't realize you knew my age(49). I sure didn't realize you were looking over my shoulder at the odometer every time I sold one of my bikes, but I guess you were. You must have been looking the other way when I sold my 78 FLH with 62,000 on the clock. Or the '91 Heritage with 44,000. As for them 30-40 year old jap bikes you see on a daily basis, you must be riding around in that bike museum in Birmingham, cause I don't know another soul on the planet that sees jap bikes from the 60's and 70's on a daily basis.

Hey, at least Harley stands on its own 2 feet they dont need 3 or 4 franchises in 1 building just to pay the light bill.

Boy whos the idiot that started this thread? I think you need anger management there friend.
I'm the IDIOT and if you had actually read the post, or any of the 4 pages that followed, "friend", you would have realised that I didn't write it!
I posted it because I found it while looking for something else, given our proclivity here to Harley bash, I thought some might find it interesting, particularly since most of what we do here is toung-in-cheek, but Mr Shields obviously belives his oun propaganda! And quite frankley some of his one liners are funny!
I know several Harley riders who fit All of Mr Shields "pigeon holes" BUT I also know those who don't...Like ANY steriotype there will always be those who fit and those who don't. My first choice of bikes was a Harley Dyna wide glide...but due to reasons involving the death of my cousin...well it's a long story and not the point...point is I like Harleys and might still own one. But I like Triumph also and do oun one!
Mr.Shields goes off half cocked and makes many points that are true and many that are pure BS...but in all fairness to MR Shields Maybe the reality of his twisted world doesn't allow the facts to be seen clearly.
You on the other hand go off half cocked calling me an Idiot and suggesting anger management when the facts are clearly available to you...
First line of post...
Man this guy HATES Harleys....
Last line...
Written by Christopher Shields October 18, 1993...
then there's several pages of posts discussing Mr. Shields and his warped view points...
As BigBill so often states.... "Yeah, next time do a little research maybe....I'll have the roast duck with mango salsa"

I saw George Carlin at a local reservation casino a few years ago. He didn't seem too happy that he had to do this gig. The crowd didn't help though, they were pretty lifeless. Of course George tried to fire them up with some insults, but it wasn't waorking. I think George is more cantankerous since he quit smoking pot...a subject he brought up during his act.

I must be the one soul - How many rebuilds you have on those Harley's at 44,000 miles? Both my new ones fell to pieces after 25,000 miles. I wonder why my earlier '74 Yamaha was rock solid after 37,000 miles in two years. I talked to the guy who bought it from me in Visalia, California last year who says it's still running well at 156,000 miles (of course it's a Triumph copy).
Don't brag to me about these HD pieces of garbage - I love to buy American when I can, but if I want a VTwin - I'll get a Kawasaki Nomad, made in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Like I said, Experience beats an argument every time.
Now, my youngest daughter is going to Texas for college this fall. I'll be riding out there a couple times, and going through Mississippi. Can I buy you lunch???
AND YES, I DO KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT! Been there, done that, and the T-shirt's all that reminds me.

No rebuilds on any of my bikes. Learn to maintain a bike and it might not fall apart on ya. Keep buying those jap copies of Harleys. That's what you need to be riding. You're right about one thing though. Experience does beat an argument anytime. That's why I'll stick with Harleys and Trumps. Had a good experience with both. Now about lunch. Stop by anytime. You shouldn't have any trouble finding my house. You're psychic remember. AND NO, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.

RobBA05,
The way I see this guy's rant, albeit excessive, it is about America's lack of capacity to build a motorcycle beyond the low performance "old school" models produced by HD. If we remain within these specific parameters, I would say he was absolutely right. A shame really, as the US has both the market numbers/population and possibly the engineering for high performance machines alongside those beautiful "locomotives" (performance-wise) currently offered.

I agree...but...he takes one step further and goes to the point of being excessivly insulting to ALL Harley riders...and assumes that what "we" want is a fast, high, performance, race bike...or that Harley SHOULD be making the same...obviously "WE" don't want that (or else this would be Daytona.com) and given that virtually EVERY Jap manufacturer has copied the look of the Harley...I would say that even his "choice of mfgs" has bowed to the "image" that Harley sells....and much like Triumph...if Harley sells everything they make, like Triumph with the BA or Speedy...why should they change what works...they in Bussiness to make $$$ and...well...they are!
I agree that it's a shame that we have no real representation in the superbike market...much like I find it disturbing that the "official car" of the US Ski team is a Subaru...but I guess Harley figures they have the market they need and why rock the boat...the costs involved with retooling a factory and producing a true sport bike in a market Dominated by other mfgs, is astronomical...and may not yeild the results ($$$) that they want...why would you do that when you have a VERY sucsessful line that you now work...so sucsessful in fact that virtually every other manufacture has in some way tried to take a piece of...even Triumph with the America/Speedmaster/Rocket has gone for the "cruiser" market.
In short (yeah right) Do I think Harley is over priced...yep Do I think they have sold us an image...you bet Do I think that there are alot of posers and wannabees riding Harleys...yup Do I wish "we" (USA) had a bike to rep us in the superbike arena...yup I Disagree that we(they) have the capacity to make a superbike... we (they) just lack the desire...or the need
But...If $$$ was no object would I buy a Harley...your damm right I would...
Do I think it's Harleys "responsibility" to supply us with a low cost bike of superior quality...nope they're in BUSINESS to make $$$
And quite frankly the days of Harleys bleeding oil like a stuck pig are gone...those I know with them have found them to be very reliable...
Just like the days of Triumph breaking down and running like crap are gone...and the anti-Christ, Lucas, is gone with them...
It's NOT Harley Davidsons responsibility to be the Moral compass of the American consumer, it's their job to make $$$for their share holders...and that they do...and if you think $20K is to much to pay for a Dyna Wide Glide...fine go buy a Kawi Vulcan that looks like one for $12K less...but your still buying the look/image that Harley sells...
Would I pay more (if I owned a Harley) for a leather Jacket because it had a "Bar and Shield"...why not I payed Brent more for a Union Jack on my parts from him....
Mr Shields makes some good points...but he clouds the points with streiotypes and hate...all steriotypes are based in fact but that doesn't make them the absolute truth!

I have a suggestion. The NEXT time somebody starts an "anti-Harley thread" around here, we have one of the Moderators insert this last input of Rob's here....'CUZ....I don't think ANYBODY is going to EVER say it BETTER than Rob just has! Man, you are too much. Just when I thought you couldn't out do yourself with the story about the 40 year old jap bikes you see everyday, or the '74 Yamaha you had that's got 156,000 miles on it, you actually out do yourself. I'm snoopin' around on another thread and low and behold, there you are, talking about what you'd do if you won the lotto. One thing was to consider buying a Harley! Not just any Harley, but the same model that you explained to me had fallen apart on you after 25,000 miles, and how they were junk and garbage. Which is it dude? Are they garbage, or are you considering buying one??? You know, I should have known you were a b/s artist with the first two stories about the forty year old jap junk and the high mileage Yamaha, but with this last post on the other thread, you just lost all credibility. And you might back off on the threats there pal. You're startin' to sound like an 8 year old kid on the playground that didn't get his way. Don't waste my time with a response. I won't waste time reading it. Drive Safe!

Ok, I have a question for you (because I have owned 35/36 bikes but never a HD and I am clueless).
During the past six months I have been planning a trip through the States, which, as I am recovering from a recent accident, will probably be pushed back to May/June or Aug/Sept of next year. This trip is to start in LA (where I will purchase the bike and keep it in the US afterwards) and I plan to travel in the shape of a back-to-front "Z", ending up in NY.
Dwight suggested (and went a long, looong way out of his way to assist and research HD's for me) that if I am to cross the States on a "Trip Americana" I need to do it on an American bike. I agree with this concept and I/we were considering something along the lines of a Dyna Sport Custom. Now, given the rumours/bashing one keeps hearing about reliability, do you think I would be reckless considering such a bike for this trip?
I am particularly nervous (not really - I have travelled down the length of Africa on a bike - that took all the Sh1t out of me, then. ) especially as HD had a major recall (in DEC) on all the Dynas with the new 6-speed gearbox which turned out problematical.
Any ideas on the subject ... Gents???
P.S. Forgive me for exploiting this thread for my own purposes but it seemed an apt opportunity.

Not at all! I appologize if you detected any anger in my LAST post if so its probabley left over from being called an IDIOT (not by you)
As far as your request for data...unfortunatly, I have pleanty of friends with Harleys, but have never owned one myself, so I can only offer an oppinion but if I were making such a trip I would consider a touring modle Road King/ electraglide ect. as far as recalls...we all make mistakes...Triumph as I recall just had a few of those also...and you probably will find pleanty of dealerships along the way (on the off chance you need one)if your really concerned...as you map your trip make note of the dealreships in the areas of where you'll be. But I think you'll be more than fine...
I'm VERY envious of your trip! Enjoy it...we live in an absolutly beautiful country and few take the time to travle it in such a manner!! Often times opting for the destination rather than the journey!!!
Having been across country (by car) on more than one occasion....I can truely say that I could travle this country for the rest of my life and continue to be ammazed at the vistas and scenery it offers! Take your time and soak in what very few have the chance to see! what an awesome trip....Photo everything!!!
If you should decide to go further east on your journey PLEASE stop by and visit NH lunch/dinner/ on me and a place to crash should you need!
Ride safe!

Kenny, Bless your poor heart and dumb head. Yes, I'd love to have another Harley to ride around town and show everyone what a tough biker I am. But it would be a third or fourth bike. And that's all it is, I'd almost pick a Chinese scooter over a Harley. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IS GET BACK TO YOUR HARLEY SITE AND WALLOW IN YOUR PITIFUL SORROW! You are obviously a Triumph poser wannabe and shouldn't even be here. Go Away. I will stick to my guns - Harley Davidsons are overweight, overpriced and underpowered. I love them because of my union background and I love to buy American - when the product is of any quality. I just think HD motorcucles are a bit substandard. Like I said in another post, "It has been argued that Harley is more than a motorcycle. It can also be argued that Harley is less than a motorcycle". I so argue. I love them, but they are substandard. They have always had one engineering mindthought - "if it breaks, make it twice as big". That's it, that's all they've got! Get over it. Or go back to HogNuts.com and tell them your worries. You are just a Flamer, and have no idea what a motorcycle is. When can we meet for lunch?
Ride Safe,
Dennis

Well Rob, It looks like a lot of members' true colors have come out on this thread. A bunch of HD wannabees who can't afford "their overpriced dream bike and matching trailer", and have no idea what motorcycling is about. Thanks for posting it, looks like some "blanket parties" may be in order in Georgia and other rallies. I love Harleys, they are a love/hate item - I choose both! I love 'em and I hate 'em. They are great to ride, as long as you don't pile up the miles. And stupid chicks dig 'em. How many times have you been told, "I like your Harley" or "Nice Harley". Whoa!!! let me re-evaluate my choice of motorcycles. I enjoy (as does my wife) talking to older gentlemen about my Triumph. Men who know that riding a bike is not about an image, but enoying the smells of springtime, the wind in your face, spinning two gyroscopic wheels through twistie roads. Pushing it to the limit and testing your mechanical skills, knowing that it is just a machine. God knows, I love my Triumph. After I fill my garage with Triumphs and maybe a few vintage bikes and a BMW or two - Maybe a new Harley. At least I'll enjoy it for 2-3 years. Now, Get Real. Why did you buy a Triumph?
Ride Safe,
Dennis

Dennis, I am a proud owner of three Triumphs at this time of my life(all of different vintages), and own so many shirts and jackets that proudly proclaim this motorcycle brand's name upon them to the world, that my wife thinks my wardrobe consists of nothing but this specific apparel nowdays. In other words...I bow to no man in my appreciation of TRIUMPH MOTORCYCLES. BUT, I think you're over-stating your case here, in regard to Harley-Davidson Motorcyles, bud! And Kenny...the SAME goes to you in regard to your anti-japanese bias, bro! So Gentlemen...I suggest you BOTH look up the word "hyperbole" in your Funk and Wagnalls. Cheers, Dwight (and if either of you guys suggest I use a certain dictionary as a suppository, I'm ridin' over to your house on one of my Triumphs to personally show you which page that word is on)

Now, Get Real. Why did you buy a Triumph?
Love my Trumpet...went to a bike show in 2002 looking for a bike (read Harley) saw the "new" Triumph America loved it the first time I saw it...
Had a 79 Bonnie 750 kick start that ran like crap...but loved to ride it when it was working...did some research (here and other sites) found that the devil incarnate (read Lucas) was no longer connected with Triumph and despite looking at various HD and HD look-a-likes had to come back to the Triumph...
My cousin was diagnosed with terminal cancer and decided to will me his 2002 Electra Glide Police bike and though I wasn't looking for that style bike...how can you turn those wishes down...
I was going to not buy anything...but I really didn't want to be like a "vulture waiting"...so I went to buy a cheap Jap knock off to get me buy...but couldnt do it...
I saw him in November for Thanksgiving and he was doing well and said "we have to ride", but me with no bike...finally after much debate about the bike, I decided to get what I wanted and worrie about what to do if I should end up with two bikes later...
I bought the Triumph that I saw 4 years earlier because I loved that bike...more my style...I bought it in January knowing that prices would be great on a 05 leftover...and that on the very first chance the weather allowed we would ride regardless of time of year...afterall his time here was limited...
The day after I signed the papers and "bought" my bike, I got a call telling me that he had been rushed to the hospital and would not likely make it through the night...
Seven days later he died...we never had that ride...
He never told his wife of his wishes for his bike (which is fine with me for it really wasn't the type of bike I wanted at this time in my life)...
But the first real ride I get to have is dedicated to him!!
Thats as "real" as I get...and thats why I bought my Triumph!

Some of you guys keep mentioning the V-Rod. The V-Rod is not and never will be a Harley. Harley couldn't design something like that. It's a Porche with a Harley name!

Wow - I just read that initial rant for the first time. Personally - and maybe it's just me - uh, don't we all ride? I have been exposed recently to a few really nice Harleys; they aren't the fastest, bikes, but they're pretty ****** reliable nowadays, and they have style, like it or not. Why else would all the Jap bikes make Harley clones? I have to hand it to Triumph for at least making a cruiser that has its own identity, but I can't bash Harley - they're making what works and what sells. Hey, I wouldn't trade my America for anything, but I can't dis Harley. If you hate their image, blame all the middle-aged yuppies to identify with them.
Man, if I knew anything, I'd be rich and famous...
