I don't know if this has been posted on here before but if you've got 27 minutes to spare, here's a look at road safety in the UK, 1955 style. It's "jolly" good!! I don't think anyone in the UK speaks like this any more, apart from Her Majesty, god bless her. There's some great nostalgic footage of old bikes, cars and "lorries". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUxRmDHeE44

No Ol' Boy, I don't believe this one has ever been posted by anyone before. And so, thank you for ever so much for doing this. I know I was quite entertained by it. Btw John, I could be wrong here, but while it said this film was a "Victor Horsman Production"(according to what I could find over the Internet, Horsman being a successful English motorcycle racer of the 1920s and evidently later opening his own motorcycle dealership in Liverpool), I believe the gentleman hosting this film at the beginning and doing the voiceover throughout was not Victor Horsman but instead appears to be Triumph's own Edward Turner. I believe this to be true because here's a picture of Mr. Turner... And here's the best picture I could find of Mr. Horsman(in his younger days only, unfortunately)... And, if you compare the two of them to the gentleman in the film, the gentleman in the film sure looks a lot more like the former than the latter...at least to me, anyway. In any case, it would be interesting to get a definitive answer on this one way or the other, wouldn't you say?!
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Dwight, I reckon you're bang on about Mr Turner, I suppose it's highly possible that back in the day, the Motorcycle Industry boss's had more practical involvement to promote their goods. In the UK there was a hell of a lot more people on bikes back then, so a voice over would be a good advert for his company. It's only when cars got cheaper towards the early 60's that your average family could afford 4 wheels instead of two or three. Glad you liked it. Cheers!

Btw John, one more question here. In your preface... Quote:

...You placed quotation marks around the word "lorries", giving me the impression you folks over there seldom use that word anymore to describe what we Yanks have always called "trucks". And so, is the word "truck" now more commonly used on that island o' yours?

I figured that some might wonder what a "lorry" was. It is still a common term over here, but there arent many this side of the pond would know what a "semi" was, most people would think it referred to a style of house. A semi over here is usually known as an "artic" as in articulated lorry. But then you may know this already.

Garf, great find, thanks.

This was cool, and a much appreciated link. Thank you very much. The word, "lorry" is nothing new to me. During my time in Zimbabwe we referred to trucks as lorries. I got quite used to it. To this day I can be heard saying, "What a lorry load of crap!"
