Well Keith, I think that IS some of it here, but the other aspect would be the ever advancement of technology and getting more power out of smaller and smaller displacement.
I mean, back in the day you've mentioned here, a 650cc motorcycle was considered "big" because it was putting out around 45 or so hoursepower, which at the time was quite a bit in comparison to all motorcycles sold at the time, AND at a time when out-and-out racing machines we're at the 80-90BHP mark. But now days, even 600cc sportbikes that one can walk into a dealership and plunk down money for, are averaging well over 100BHP, and when out-and-out racers are now reaching 200BHP or more output.
