I would always go accoustic if i could only have one guitar, if he wants sound he can get an accoustic elextric, you can buy a decent one for around that 4-500 range new of 1/2 used. Takaminie makes very nice guitars now in that price range as do several others. Before a guitar player learns to make allot of nosie with effects and amps etc they should learn how to play an acoustic. Just my opinion. PS easier to play around a fire with an accoutic then an electric! LOL
