erle, good info, I plan on keeping the extra bits in case the mood strikes and i get crafty.
I have a rear mud guard installed that also doubles as a battery holder. It came with the freak kit, even though I dont use the side brackets.

I taped up the lines. basically tape on either side of where I want to cut then one piece over where Im cutting so there is a visible line beneath the tape.
I guess I will just use my dremel and a cutting wheel. Its probably my easiest tool to control and a cutting wheel seems better than a metal blade.
I'll post pics when its done.
Now to order some touch up paint for the bare edges.
