Will changing the intake manifolds to the Billet ones from BC change the tune of the bike much? Just wondering.

Mike, you can almost realize as much of a performance improvement by simple alignment of your stock intakes as to the heat spacers, and the aluminum barrels aligned to the ports on your head. There is is an incredible amount of slop in our intakes as built and installed. With your carbs off and the manifolds bolted to the head, feel with your finger the uneven and shoved over to one side, the 90 degree steps the fuel/air flows encounters in just that short of a span. I bolted up both mans. and spacers, sans carbs, aligned as good as I could get by feel, locked them down in place and used a Shepard hook scribe to mark where a little filing with a 5/16th rat tail file and a finish with sandpaper to blend them in. My final step was to drill for 1/8th" dowel pins (2 each) to keep the sweet spots in place for the next teardown/reassemble. And I used a gram scale to make sure I was reasonably close in the amount of material I removed from each segment, I have no idea if weighing accomplished diddly-doo, but I did it anyway. The center to center on the bolted up and pinned in manis came out 3/32nd" tighter than my carbs c to c, so was no issue there. All in all, I do notice a smoother power delivery at all RPMs, even at idle. Greater velocity means more fuel will enter the combust. chamber and that's the goal. So, yeah, billet intakes would/should be superior to OEM as installed. At least one should hope so.

I put a piece of cardboard over the port and lightly tapped it, just enough to get an impression. I then carefully cut that and put it over the intake and inked it then simply removed the ink and did the same the other direction.

If that is the only change, then no.

Great info guys thanks. I already bought them, just curious, more flow (maybe) air and less fuel potentially leaning it out a bit, which frankly might not be to bad cause the bike has always been on the rich side of things, dealer did the tune and apparently they leave enough room for error. thanks again.

So Marty and i put the new manifolds on, but has anyone figured out a way to get some torque on the bolts holding them to the cylinder? The manifolds are built in a way that does not allow you to get a socket or anything in there, they are tight and with blue thread lock, but i am wondering if they are tight enough.

I used a ratchet with a very long 1/4 inch drive extension and socket to tighten those, came in from out past the carbs.

Really! i have the keys on ratchets but they won't fit in beside the rubber portion of the manifolt puts it at an angle, i am pretty sure we have those on right, they only go on one way don't they? Also found if we slammed the carbs right into the boots then they locked up the throttle cables so we had to back them out a bit then button it down......good grief its a bloody manifold, what could we have done wrong?

RE: Cables... Im curious as to how far the manifolds lift the OEM carbs? Can you post a pic? For reference when I installed the FCRs I had to adjust the throttle cables further down into the cable holder thingy. No big deal really. I guess I forgot to tell you that before as I just remembered. RE: tightening down I went down to look and remember doing one of two things... 1 - using a 1/4" drive bit and small 1/4" box end wrench or 2 - using a long ball head hex driver

Actually they sit in there pretty much at the same level, slightly forward though becasue the oem manifolds are a bit deeper to the rear of the bike, i think thats the biggest issue with not being able to push them all the way in before it starts to play with cables and such, i am less concerned with that then the torque on the part that in on the cylinder. I think part of the issue was that i put both pieces together first and then onto the bike, instead of putting the hard billet portion on first and then the rubber portion. thats the only thing i can think of, come to think of it that might be the trick, i will have to go look LOL

well i went out and had a look, still not sure anything other then the right angle of a hex key will fit in there, also the torque rating on those bolts is very low at 9 lbs so i might be ok with the real good hand torque of them. my only option would seem to be to take everything off again, trying to avoid that.

can you use the stock flange headed screws? they are an 8mm hex. I recall no issues with getting them off and on with either a socket or an end wrench (ring spanner)

Actually Z Marty said the same thing, the ones he got with his FCR have no angle to them but the ones you buy from BC customs do so they sit pretty much the same way the oem ones do in terms of height et all.

Yeah, they are the Balls if no serious torque is involved, if you need to get up on a fastener, they bugger the hex cap of the bolt or the ball end snaps off the tool, sometimes both.

well i spoke with british customs just to feel better about it and apparently they only need to be tight with blue locktight on the nuts, the O-ring inside does most of the work. I hate starting the bike when its -15 or so out, builds up condesation in the crank/white bubbles etc, not really sure why that is actually, but when i do fire it up i will spray check it with something and make sure i don't have any leaks.
