Good on you Cliff,
Before I respond with any specifics, it's my opinion you have bought a bike which will get into your blood provided you don't lose your nerve and 'chicken out' so to speak. I and most on here would not like to see the latter happen mainly because we all speak from experience and remember the time we were just like you, pondering what directions we should take.
Just that thank goodness I did take their advice and trust those who again were trying to convince a newbie, and so we come full circle where some time in the future you too may very well be tapping away to inspire faith in another newbie. .
I'll look at posting tmw or so what parts list you'll need but suspect others will beat me to it by then but one item that needs to put on your list as a matter of priority are a set of stainless steel hex head screws to replace those disgraceful numbers currently holding the carb's tops and bowls in place. The amount of times you'll be dismantling etc makes it one of the single most important items around.
The other if you haven't already itemised is a pair of thumb screw type air / fuel adjusters. You'll have to forgive me but I'm a bit rusty with my terminology as my speedy has had to take a back step vacation due to firstly some medical issues and then my getting used to my new Triumph Explorer.
Finally, may I suggest when considering pipes or suspension or any other of the more expensive items, keep in mind if they are a little bit more expensive it's for a reason. If you can't wait, why not consider looking for second hand whatever's until you can afford what you're after later. That's of course unless you get lucky on the used but not abused front.
Don't forget the hex head screws available from my buddy Fast Eddy.
